How do i make activation product key work when i try to activate?

Hello please help me on this one the problem is i'm trying to activate my computer by using my product key on my desktop that where it show the product key code and i look at it and copy and paste it i did that that didn't work another part that important is "found in the confirmation email you received after purchasing Windows, or in the box Windows came in" i don't understand that part when it say that the only thing that can happen me finding my product key is the desktop i have check and copy and paste the product key i was thinking that for real my product key for some reason that didn't
