Guest Fred Hewett Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 Today's update entitled, "Security Update for Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 and Microsoft Virtual 2004, Service Pack 1 (KB937986)" has failed to install three times. Each time, the failure is described as, "Installation Failure", "Error Code: 0x11". All of the rest of today's updates installed without error. I am runnint XP Pro SP2 on Intel Pentium D.
Guest jbh Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 I have had the same problem - there were another half dozen or so updates, which would not install initially, so I went to the web-site. Then all but the last two installed - KB937143 and KB 937986. Any idea of a solution yet? I've tried re-installing them five times, and have turned off my virus program, to no avail. Guest jbh Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 No such log exists. It was actually: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB937143) Security Update for Windows XP (KB936021) That would not install. Guest gjm Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 No Log files found anywhere related to the failure. It is NOT temp space used up, I cleaned all temp directories after looing for .log and retried. Windows XP pro sp2 Pentium 4 3.o ghz 2gb memory 13.9 gb free on C:, 9.44 GB free on temp
Guest Fred Hewett Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 The file was actually in my %TEMP% directory. The contents: Resource copy failed from D:\Temp\FredH\Virtual PC.exe to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Virtual PC\Virtual PC.exe -- Fred "MowGreen [MVP]" wrote: > Post the contents of the KB937986.log that is located in your User > Profile folder. > Go to Start > Run > type in [or copy&paste the below] > > %userprofile%\Local Settings > > Click OK or press Enter > Open the Temp folder and than copy&paste the KB937986.log into your > reply, please. > > > MowGreen [MVP 2003-2007] > =============== > *-343-* FDNY > Never Forgotten > ===============
Guest MowGreen [MVP] Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 To *All* of the folks who tagged onto this thread, PLEASE START YOUR OWN THREAD. This one was started Fred and for the issue of installing KB937986 in XP, NOTHING ELSE !! Thanks. ============================================================================================ Fred, The log *should be* located in Documents and Settings\<YourUserAccountName>\Local Settings\Temp is that where you found it ? Which version of VPC is installed ... VPC or VPC SP1 ? The updates *are* different: Security Update for Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 (KB937986) http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e2c72aab-00de-47c9-8ecb-09261c4b7deb&DisplayLang=en Security Update for Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 SP1 (KB937986) http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=2bda2b8b-9c1c-4bf8-9a65-491092276e7a&DisplayLang=en Suggest you download and SAVE the correct one for the version of VPC installed. Save it to the same partition/HD as the one that VPC is installed to or move it there after the download completes. Close the browser and any other open programs. ENSURE that VPC is NOT running. If that requires a restart, then do that first. Then run the executable that you downloaded. The update updates VPC's executable, Virtual PC.exe. For VPC RTM it updates it to V. 5.3.0.583 For VPC SP1, either V. 5.3.582.44 OR, V 5.3.582.45 MowGreen [MVP 2003-2007] =============== *-343-* FDNY Never Forgotten =============== Fred Hewett wrote: > The file was actually in my %TEMP% directory. Guest Fred Hewett Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 No, the file was in my %TEMP% directory. If the TEMP environment variable is defined, that's where temp files go. However, seeing this error gave me a couple of ideas. The last one paid off: I undefined TEMP and TMP in System Properties and tried again. It then worked. FYI: It then put KB937986.log in C:\Windows\Temp, not "%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp". For me, USERPROFILE=D:\Profiles\FredH. I have seen things like this before occasionally. Sometimes MS assumes that the temp directory will be on the same drive as Windows. I haven't seen it for a while it just didn't occur to me that they'd do that for an update. -- Fred P.S. To answer your other question: I have VPC 2004 SP1, although there is no obvious way to tell. Hm, to workaround the problem, you may wish to uninstall VPC 2004 SP1 and install VPC 2007: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=04d26402-3199-48a3-afa2-2dc0b40a73b6&DisplayLang=en Bye, Freudi

I had exactly the same problem and this fixed it for me too. Nick.
Guest Bob Hagen Posted August 16, 2007 Posted August 16, 2007 I installed KB937986 today and it caused all my Virtual PC 2004 machines serial ports to stop working. They could transmit data out but would not receive data on the serial port. I uninstalled VPC 2004 and re-installed the original 2004 SP1 and it worked again. Watch out for this update.
