Guest jbh Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 Actually it was the following that would not install. Have tried several times. Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB937143) Security Update for Windows XP (KB936021) Any suggestions on how to get it them to install - the system has slowed down to a crawl. I have tried turning off my virus software, but that hasn't helped.

Bye, Freudi
Guest jbh Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 I have tried, but no such log file exists. The last log file was for a java update earlier in the same day. Oh, I'm pretty sure they are there - in case you don't chase your System with some "Cleaning" programs. You may wanna try the following to see the LOG file's content: Start -> Run -> %windir%\KB937143-IE7.log [Hit Enter key] Start -> Run -> %windir%\KB936021.log [Hit Enter key] Bye, Freudi -- Macht euer Windows sicherer: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com - jetzt! http://www.microsoft.com/germany/sicherheit/ Infos zu aktuellen Patches für IE, OE und WinXP: http://patch-info.de Letzte Aktualisierung: IE - 14.08.07 / OE - 12.06.07 / WinXP - 14.08.07

"Something", most likely a software running in the background, is restricting access to the registry. Writing premissions are needed to complete the installation. Guest Dave Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 I see your point, however I shut down everything I could via taskmgr and was still unable to install the update. I don't have any security software installed on my computer and windows firewall is enabled. I still get the same error: 11.000: DoRegistryUpdates:UpdSpInstallFromInfSection Failed for ProductInstall.GlobalRegistryChanges.Install error: 0x5 11.000: INF_REGISTRY Failed 11.000: DoInstallation:DoRegistryUpdates failed 11.047: Access is denied. 11.047: KB937143 installation did not complete. Any other ideas? Thanks for your input. Guest Qwelldrin Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 Hi Ottmar, This update is really giving me a headache. I disabled everything in MSCONFIG and re-started after the warning about starting in diagnostic mode I attempted to re-install the update. The following updates where unable to be installed "Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB937143)" Tried option 2 in your previous link and the update worked. Not sure though that MS should be releasing Updates that require manual registry corrections in order to update.. Thanks for your help "Ottmar Freudenberger" wrote: > "Dave" <Dave@discussions.microsoft.com> schrieb: > > >I see your point, however I shut down everything I could via taskmgr and was > > still unable to install the update. > > Disable *every* entry you'll find under "Start -> Run -> msconfig [Hit > Enter] -> System Start" and let Windows reboot and apply the update > afterwards. Guest Dave Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 Phew, that was a tough update. I had to follow method 2 and was able to reset the permissions on 2 of the keys. SYSTEM had full access, but Administrators had only "Read Only" access. Thanks very much for your help, I would never have figured this out on my own. I have 2 other updates that refuse to install also, but they aren't critical updates so I will attempt to debug them as per this new enlightement. Thanks again Freudi. Fine :-) > Not sure though that MS should be releasing Updates that require > manual registry corrections in order to update.. Well, in a normal system, there's no need to munge in the registry to get the update installed. But there's a bunch of "Tools" and "Utilities" out there, which are indeed manipulating the registry and are restric- ting user rights for editing/updating the registry to prevent the user from doing something which he shouldn't do (in the sense of the vendor of these tools). While this may even be a good idea, it's causing problems when an Windows update needs to access/change a registry key. The real cause is not the update, but the restrictions set from whom/ whichever for whatever reason. Nice weekend, Freudi

Hm, which software is running on your system normally? Especially "Security" applications may have restricted the access to the reg keys. > Thanks very much for your help, YW and HANW, Freudi
Guest Qwelldrin Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 Hi Freudi, For information I run Norton 360, this is the only third party security suite I have running on my system. Guest Qwelldrin Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 Agreed probebly was this that set the administrator settings but as this has been the only Update to cause this problem ever. What was different about this update that required a specific settings change to the administrator rights that no IE update has required before? You may want to contact Symantec support - or stay away from Symantec's products at all. Bye, Freudi
Guest Qwelldrin Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 Hi Freudi, A note on the update..... Running the autoupdate on two desktops. Desktop 1 .Windows XP home SP2 & Norton 360.... Update completed with no user action necesssary. Desktop 2. Windows XP Pro SP2 & Norton 360.... Update completed with no user action necessary. Laptop 1. Windows MCE & Norton 360..... the update had to be installed after a modification of the registry keys. Is this possibly an MCE problem? Nope, having Symantec (especially but not exclusively Symantec) software running in the background is like playing Russian Roulette to some extend. Bye, Freudi
Guest Lady Dungeness Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 It's Russian Roulette to have software that isn't Microsoft. Uninstall all other software immediately. Promise never to do it again. Guest Qwelldrin Posted August 19, 2007 Posted August 19, 2007 Hi Freudi, Both Desktops now having completed the autoupdate will now not run an internet connection and sit on IE7 showing only a white page with the tab saying connecting (Left for 4 hours Plus with no content being displayed) then I have to force a close. IE7 About button will also not display any details. the Drop down menu works upto the About button then nothing happens after clicking the about Label. Tried running this in Safe mode as well no joy. How do I uninstall this update as it is not listed in the Add remove programs. Or as a last resort now remove IE7 as this is totally useless on the desktops now. This also Cant be just me though as this is being Highlighted as problems all over the world. Including some PC Magazines indicating this particular update as a significant nightmare, with no exact cause or fix. Pushed the details on to Microsoft but as yet no reply. This is costing me a mint at the moment as the Desktops are unable to connect to my servers. Any help you could provide would be great as MS have a habit of only replying after about 4-5 days. Cheers and thanks. Guest Qwelldrin Posted August 19, 2007 Posted August 19, 2007 Yep I guess, I will have to uninstall everything so this update will work, and we can go on testing MS Beta software that is bugged. Well back to IE 6 or move on to FireFox at least this works. Well you know look at VISTA now theres another operating system that should have been launched as a Beta version so that all the users can do the work and reprot bugs in it so MS can send us all new fancy software that is unreliable. Guest Qwelldrin Posted August 19, 2007 Posted August 19, 2007 You could be right but after uninstalling Norton and using the Norton Clean up tool. IE7 still hangs after installing (KB937143). The FIX is not to install this update and if you have remove it again using the add remove programs, section. So in this instance it would appear not to be Norton, would have to uninstall every piece of software individualy to find the effecting software, or much easier DONT install this update. I will wait for an update that does work.
