Guest Carlos at work Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 I'm on windows XP pro. i let xp update before I left the office yesterday. Came in today. My computer was super slow to boot to log-in, and terribly slow to actually load windows. Once loaded, no office applications will open properly, no network connections or drivers are loading, cant get to system, cant launch system restore, cant launch services window. I have already tried booting in safe mode and launching and deploying a system restore, which was done successfully but after rebooting to normal mode, I get the same result. All the updates have been removed. I'm afraid I am going to have to restore windows, using the XP CD. Any suggestions or fixes?
Guest dandyvonbergamo@googlemail.com Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 no need to reinstall XP. I have the same problem and - temporarily - solved it by going back to the system restore assistant and changed back the system to the state it was before. Will now trying to install updates one by one to locate the bug. Godd Luck! Guest Marc Gegool Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 same problem here as well, did as Dandy described BUT used reboot in safe mode with administrator account then chose system restore and undid (only) the cumulative update. After that I installed the updates again but one by one with rebooting after each one. Seems to work fine now. cheers, Marc "sdlomi2" <daniels_sam@bellsouth.net> schrieb im Newsbeitrag news:aZHwi.2028$t9.907@bignews7.bellsouth.net... > > <dandyvonbergamo@googlemail.com> wrote in message > news:1187203448.091425.89860@19g2000hsx.googlegroups.com... >> no need to reinstall XP. Guest Dave Posted August 16, 2007 Posted August 16, 2007 I'm having the same problem. Processor utilization is near 100% or quickly spikes to it when you open any application. IE is especially bad. I tried dandyvonberg's suggestion of rolling back with system restore. Did not fix problem for me. That brings me to a related but important question. Does system restore really restore everything??? Or are certain system files and/or bug fixes left in their current state? By the way, has Microsoft published any info on this problem? From what little I've researched, it seems to be affecting a lot of people. Thank you, Dave. On Aug 15, 11:44 am, dandyvonberg...@googlemail.com wrote: > no need to reinstall XP. I have no suggestions for this time, but would highly encourage you to immediately do two things when you're back running: 1) STOP the auto updates! Set it to "notify but do not download", then ALWAYS set your own RP, and 2) get a good imaging utility such as Acronis True Image and periodically run a full image backup of your system when it is running OK and you're sure you're not infected with any malware (doesn't make sense to backup a wounded system). Then, if lighting does strike along with a visit from Murphy, as it sounds like it has for you, you can restore from a FULL system backup and not spend days rebuilding your system. One other suggestion, if you are saving your data to C:\ I'd suggest you build an extended partition for all of the stuff you create. That separates your data from anything that goes bump in the night with your system and vastly simplifies the task of rebuilding without losing everything you've ever done. Along with that, create a rigorous backup regiment to either optical or external HD and be certain that ALL your data and your Windows settings are preserved somewhere safe. Good luck in fixing your PC! -- HP, aka Jerry
