Each month Microsoft releases that month's updates in ISO format: January 2006-current http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913086 If you are more trusting: AutoPatcher http://www.autopatcher.com/ Windows Updates Downloader http://wud.jcarle.com/ You can download each update manually - based off the KB Article number, etc. That way you can back it up/burn a CD of them in case you need them or use them to keep a slipstream/integrated (updated) Windows XP CD. If you simply replace ## with the two-digit year and the *** with the three character month abbreviation, you will see the list of "critical" and "important" patches for that month (since it only happens once a month usually, if you check by the second Tuesday (wait until afternoon) of each month - you should be fine) - note that future months will not work. As an example... December 2004's patches.. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms04-dec.mspx March 2005's patches.. None released.. so that one will fail... Joe I go here each month after receiving which updates are offered from WU Home scan..cross-checked with those on offer in the yellow shield. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/Browse.aspx?displaylang=en&categoryid=7 Then I burn them to disc, disconnect from the net, disable AV, ZAlarm, antispyware and other security stuff and download. I have often wondered how one decides what a computer, without any connection to MS, requires or needs in relation to updates. Surely, if the computer is not connected to the net, why update security patches? A question for you Shenan - I suspect you will have a logical answer. In addition, had I gone to the link given by Tom, I would have missed 3 updates and downloaded 3 more that were NOT offered in WU Home or the shield It makes me wonder what damage might have been caused had I taken this course of action. Another consideration is that I have read advice in this group that one should download in the order as given by MS? but cannot remember if it is the order as per the yellow shield or fromWU Home - as they can differ from month to month. I wish you luck with your updates. Rgds Antioch
Guest LadyDungeness@Fish.Net Posted August 16, 2007 Posted August 16, 2007 Make a RESTORE POINT. Open your IE. Go to Tools > Windows Updates. Download what it asks for so you can scan for updates. Scan for updates. Uncheck them all. Then one by one, check one box, click the + sign, look for the Details ... link at the bottom. Click it. Go to the bottom of the page that opens to a link that will take you to the full-update site. Click it. Read the page that opens. Be careful to choose the correct kind of update for your system. Find the download button. Click it. Choose Save to Disk. Download it. Go back to the Page with the list of updates. Uncheck the one you just downloaded. Check the next box ... repeat for each update. Best to have a good meal first, some relaxing music in the background, and no pandemonium around the house.
