Guest RonBiggs Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 On another machine of mine, I can see in the Add/Remove Programs dialog list that so many Windows updates are eating up a hefty chunk of space. Is there a way to tell if one of the updates is a "roll up" of several updates, or do we simply have to sacrifice the space and install every single one in order to be updated? I've just re-installed Windows XP on this machine, and there are 16 critical updates, none of which is SP1 or SP2. Short cuts? Advise? Thanks!

First - if the updates are taking up so much space you are worried about it - you need a larger hard disk drive. Second - if an update replaces another update - it removes the old and replaces it *as needed*. There is nothing for you to do. Last - Service Pack 2 was released in 2004. Since then over 85 updates have been released. You can integrate a lot of the updates into the installation media to save time in future installs - but sooner or later - without keeping the media up to date - there will be dozens more. As a testimate to this - here are the updates from SP2 to April 2007 - listed out and NOT including any that have been replaced by one that is listed here... Guest TaurArian [MS-MVP] Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 You need the updates but you can however remove the folders that have uninstall as part of the name (for example $NtUninstallKB282010$ which reside in C:\windows (hidden folders) are Window Hot Fix Update folders/files) can be safely deleted (providing you never wish to uninstall the updates). I would recommend leaving these folders for a period of at least a month to make sure the update is working correctly. These updates can be deleted individually or in multiples. To find out more about the update/s go to: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=XXXXXX NB: XXXXXX = the actual number not including the "Q" or "KB" Once you have deleted the uninstall folders/files, then go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs. Select the matching Windows Hotfix Title relating the update folder/file you have just deleted and select remove. You will get a Windows error. This is because you have deleted the uninstall folder/files. Just choose OK and the entry will be deleted from the Add/Remove Programs Listing. Another alternative is to save the uninstall files to a CD in case you ever want them. -- ==================================== TaurArian [MS-MVP] 2005-2008 - Australia ==================================== How to make a good post: http://www.dts-l.org/goodpost.htm Defending your machine: http://defendingyourmachine2.blogspot.com/ http://taurarian.mvps.org/index.htm Emails will not be acknowledged - please post to the newsgroup so all may benefit.
