No internet on Dell XPS 8500

[Windows 7]

I have a Dell XPS 8500. I recently got it from a neighbor, and Win7 Pro installed automatically upon startup. I have flashed the BIOS and updated drivers through links on the Dell website. SP1 is installed. Also got an updated driver for the network device (though when I look at it in device manager, it seems that the driver is the same one that was originally there). But I just can't get the internet to work. Have tried with ethernet cable as well - both wifi and ethernet show they are working when I look in the Network and Sharing Center.
