Guest Zom-Bunny Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 Hi you'll like this, and hope you can help. I ran windows update August 14, and rebooted my machine as requested, up to that point everything was fine. I logged in and tried to surf the web but IE would have none of it!! I ran the diagnostics piece, it did little but it did say I had a range of network cards installed, and that it couldn't find one to use!!! (I've an on-board card, and a Wireless card, both check out fine) I have Firefox, so I tried it, it worked fine, so I tried Opera, that worked fine, so IE has the issue...whatever it is. I've a P4 XP Pro SP2 DELL desktop, it has McAfee VirusScan 8.5i P1 + Anti-Spy ware installed with McAfee Firewall 8 Patch 4. All that changed was that I had installed August 14th update. These being: • MS07-042 - addresses a vulnerability for Windows and Microsoft Office (KB 936227) • MS07-043 - addresses a vulnerability for Windows, Office for Mac, and Visual Basic (KB 921503) • MS07-044 - addresses a vulnerability for Microsoft Office (KB 940965) • MS07-045 - addresses a vulnerability for Internet Explorer (KB 937143) • MS07-046 - addresses a vulnerability for all editions of Windows except Windows Vista (KB 938829) • MS07-047 - addresses a vulnerability for Windows Media Player (KB 936782) • MS07-048 - addresses a vulnerability for all editions of Windows Vista (KB 938123) • MS07-049 - addresses a vulnerability for Microsoft Virtual PC, Microsoft Virtual Server, and Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac (KB 937986) • MS07-050 - addresses a vulnerability for Internet Explorer (KB 938127) If I remove them via Add/Remove, IE still fails to connect, but if I use a previous system restore point, everything works fine! I ran the update on a couple of other PIII machine I have they fail as well, some OS version, McAfee VirusScan 8.0i Patch13 and Firewall 8.5 Patch 4. My event logs report nothing at all. IE just fails reporting no network connection. Any ideas?

Guest Zom-Bunny Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 RE: IE7 fails to connect after Windows update adds Augusts 14th up Now that is a help! Really is! Although the killer for you is not in my list, my list can be shortened. No reason or logic, just the fact the same updates are in both lists. 921503 938829 937143 936782 938127 as these might be the ones to look at more than the others, no logic at all, just a need to start somewhere I need a place to start digging around .... thats a start so I'll dig around there. First test will be remove these from the update list when I update. If IE still works after, great! if not, then repeat for the others in my list see what happens!!

Guest Yobyort Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 RE: IE7 fails to connect after Windows update adds Augusts 14th up Hello, I have a similar problem. I am running IE7.0 and had same symptoms after installing the batch of updates. I was able to un-install all of them and then re-install one at a time. I found that if I install KB937143 I get the problem. Rest of the updates are installed and system is working just fine. Well, I'm pretty sure it's the "Firewall" or the combination that's blocking access for IE. This kind of snakeoil does recognize that the iexplore.exe changes (there's a new version of iexplore.exe in every Cumulative Update released yo far) but doesn't detect that it came with the update and that it's okay to let the "new" EXE pass through. So the snakeoil blocks the access of the iexplore.exe to "the Internet" and since iexplore.exe is the executable of Internet Explorer, you can't access any site and think IE is broken. To summ up: It's *not* the update causing "connection/accessing" problems, it's the more or less stupid "Security" software running in the background on your machine. Please contact the support of the vendor of your "Security" software to prevent these problems in the future. They need to update their detection mechanism. Bye, Freudi
Guest Zom-Bunny Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 Re: IE7 fails to connect after Windows update adds Augusts 14th up Excellent call!! The Firewall was the cause! Once the rule was updated to the new 'iexplore.exe' , well I'm here posting to report the issue is resolved!
