Am I best to factory reset the laptop? Or persist with recovering a half created account that I do not have enough information saved on to verify?

A student began process of setting up a new windows device for BYOD in school, (went ahead without parent or IT coordinator help) but has forgotten the password associated with the icloud account they created. They have not gone far enough through the setup process to have enough details in the account when I have attempted to help them recover the password. Am I best to just factory reset and start again with a new account? If so, how do I do this when I can't login to the computer? ASUS laptop
