Manually installing updates without the aid of wusu

I have 2 ½ questions I’m hoping can be answered. Event Viewer logs reveals that updates are and have been occurring daily. However Settings/Update history shows there being only two since last October; KB5041585 on 10/17/24, and KB5041585 again on 01/11/25. Neither have completed, and the 01/11 attempt has caused seemingly irreparable damage. One of the casualties, was Windows Update. Neither my own attempts, nor any suggested fixes have been successful.
