WHY does OneDrive constantly keep trying to backup all of the photos on my desktop even after I turn it off a billion times?

I'm sick of turning on my laptop and having onedrive constantly trying to backup all 9000+ of my photos on my desktop. I have to constantly turn it off every single damn time I turn my laptop on. Then after it backs up whatever it does I have to delete them then recover them to get the photos back onto my desktop. I'm sick of it! I got a 128gb laptop so I can KEEP my photos on my laptop, NOT on onedrive!
