Tiny squares replace characters in office, the address bar, notepad and a few other apps periodically

Like the title states, I am having a problem with characters becoming squares/missing in several programs. Everything works fine after a reboot, but overtime more and more applications affected (or more affected - sometimes it is just, say the menu in excel but the tabs are fine, other times it is just the tabs and summary, sometimes all three. But it does get worse as time goes on. Sometimes closing the app temporarily soles the problem (in that app), but not always. Again rebooting and the issue goes away.
