My external mouse is not recognized by my laptop even though the mouse red light shows what do i do?

i have an external mouse which when i connect to my laptop does show its red light but doesnt work i have tried everything update drivers and all but only the light shows of the mouse the mouse doesnt work in mice and other pointing device it doesnt even show when i connect it to the port but the light of the mouse does glow ...what do i do??
