.NET Framework updates are killing me

Recommended Posts

Posted

I don't even know what .NET Framework is.

The latest automatic updates failed to install an update to version 2.0.

When I went to Control Panel to fix it, I was told the installation source

was missing.

MS help pages said to provide the installation source.

All I have is my retail WinXP Pro CD. That didn't work.

MS instructions on manual removal and reinstall of .NET Framework do not

work at all. In particular, MSIZAP and DOTNETFIX do nmot work as described,

whetever they are.

I am still left with a .Net Framework 1.1 that I can not remove.

Installer runs every time I reboot. I have no idea why.

My list of failed updates keeps growing.

When I reboot, my computer tells me it is installing updates but actally

hangs.

I need a clean remove of all .NET Framework versions and a clean install of

2.0, so I can get on with my life.

I am having a problem with the .NET Framework updates as well. I can't update

2.0 & 3.0. I just bought Microsoft Office Small Business and need the update

to 2.0 to install Outlook 2007 with business contact manager.

When I go to the updates page and try to install them it keeps telling me

that it is error 0x643, when I look through problem solving the error appears

not to exist, so I don't know what I'm doing wrong or what I should be doing!

I've tried rebooting and then installing but it still won't work! Any ideas

on what to do next???

This indicates that some kind of tool/app was run that aggressively

cleaned out the required reference to the .NET installation files.

Either a registry cleaner or a Temp file cleaner would appear to be the

culprit.

The Antivirus software is the culprit. You must *completely and totally*

disable the AV in order for the .NET Framework or subsequent security

uppdates for it to install *properly*. Norton, McAfee, and AntiVir have

been identified as AVs that may/will cause these issues.

Please consult the Help file of the installed AV or visit the

manufacturer's web site to learn how this is accomplished.

If you feel at risk with the AV disabled while connected to the net,

than download the .NET Framework , Service Packs, and Security

updates first, than disconnect the system from the network/internet,

install the downloaded files, REENBABLE the installed AV, and then

reconnect the system.

Did you try the steps listed here ? :

Hi, MowGreen.

Too bad MS didn't mention the AV business before sending the user down the

[unworkable] path of manual removal of .NET components.

AV removal no longer works for me. Three .NET Framework 2.0 updates fail

every time Updater runs, even with AV disabled.

I was unable to run MSIZAP because I could not find it, even after

downloading a huge SDK that purportedly contained it, according to MS. Where

can I find MSIZAP?

Tip: Temporarily disable real-time protection by your anti-virus and/or

anti-spyware applications (e.g., CounterSpy, Spysweeper, Spybot, AVG

Anti-Spyware) and/or any third-party firewall (e.g., ZA) before attempting

to install the update(s).

All fixed now.

Problem probably could have been avoided had I disabled VirusScan 2007

before letting the automatic updates run. An instruction so stating would

have ben helpful.

Once commiitted to a remove/reinstall, I was unable to remove remnants of

old .NET components because I only installed MSIZAP, I didn't run it --

mainly because there was no instruction on where to find it after install,

leading me to believe I had run it, too.

It also doesn't help that there are at least two different prograns named

"dotnetfix" with different purposes.

I guess MS provides instructions for folks who don't need instructions . . .

You want DOTNETFX.EXE [no letter I], not DOTNETFIX.EXE, v1.1:

Forget MSIZAP and follow the steps from the " .NET Guru " -
