strange message from Windoes Update - it thinks my laptop is a mac

I have been using Microsoft Update to update my windows XP (sp2) software

running on a Dell Inspiron 1000 without any problems. All of the sudden today

when I tried Microsoft Upgade I received this message.

"Thank you for your interest in obtaining updates from our site.

This website is designed to work with Microsoft Windows operating systems

only.

To find updates for Microsoft products that are designed for Macintosh

operating systems, please visit http://www.microsoft.com/mac/. "

Well imagine my surprise since I have validated my windows XP using "Windows

Genuine Advantage Program several times in the past and my loptop has for 3

years been a Dell Inspiron 1000.

Does anyone know any magic I can use to turn the poor thing back into a PC.

(It really doesn't like being called a Mac).

I'm in a box right now since I installed 12meg of update on my Desktop just

the other day so I know I need to update this laptop.

Thanks for your much need help

The problem is on Microsoft's end,,,

it happens once in a while.

Try again later (or the next day) and you should be OK

Well, I tried that. Method 4 didn't work. Windows Update still thinks my PC

is a Mac.

Any other suggestions?

By the way. Where do I look for the User-agent line?

Freudi,

Here is what I got on the User-agent line. (multiple lines)

Mozilla/4.0 (compatible MSIE 7.0 Windows NT 5.1 AT&T CSM8.0

TaxWise19.03[0001] TaxWise19.05[0002] TaxWise19.06[0003]

TaxWise20.00[0015] TaxWise20.05[0001] TaxWise20.07[0001]

TaxWise20.08[0003] TaxWise20.09[0003] TaxWise20.10[0004]

TaxWise21.00[0017] TaxWise21.04[0002] TaxWise21.05[0004]

TaxWise21.06[0005] TaxWise21.07[0003] .NET CLR 1.1.4322 .NET CLR 2.0.50727)

I am surprised to see Mozilla/4.0.

If this is incorrect, then how do I correct it?

I tried to look at other options on the page receiver from the broswer test

but alas I can't read German.

By the way - I downloaded updates directly from the Microsoft Update

website and installed 2 without any trouble. I also receiver 4 microsoft

updates via "automatic update" and these appeared to be installed as I shut

my system down last night. Rignt now I an receivieg Windows updates by way of

"automatic update".

I have already tried that at your suggestion when I first started working

this problem. It did not correct the problem. Following the last statement in

Method 4, I restored the register to its original value.

Is there anything else to try?

Are there any indications that what was in the User-Agent line incorrect?

Thanks for sticking with me in this.

You've read

http://groups.google.com/groups?threadm=13B97D75-653A-46B3-B362-97281D23873D@microsoft.com

already? The user there did have the same problem and did have the

"TaxWise" entries in the User-Agent header also.

Yes, the "TaxWise" shouldn't be there and the "AT&T CSM8.0"

neither.

Thanks. Now I'm going to ask a dumb question.

Why, after having that software on my computer for well over a year, should

I just now be having this trouble?

I can remove Taxwise but AT&T CMS8.0 is what I use to connect to my isp -

AT&T.

Thanks

Don't know, but it's obvious to me what's causing your problems

while accessing the Windows Update homepage.

May I ask you a dumb question?

Why would you like to post to *every* site you're browsing to

that you've TaxWise and AT&T CMS8.0 installed on your machine? )

You don't have to uninstall the application but remove the User Agent

entries for those applications.

Thanks for hanging in with me on this one.

I have searched the registry and only find two User Agents. I used "method

4" on both but it did not work in either case.

I can not find any user agent that has values as listed in the winware read

out of user agent for TaxWise. I have been able to locate the others.

As for posting to *every* site I"m browsing to that I have TaxWise and AT&T

CMS8.0 installed on my machine, I did not put that information in the

registry. As the software is installed these entries are appearantely made

automatically.

By the way I installed an updated version of AT&T CSM (CDM8.2) but that did

not solve the problem. This did not correct the problem and AT&T CSM8.2 also

now appears in the winware user agent read out along with AT&T CSM8.0.

Look for TaxWise (etc.) entries in the following keys in the registry:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\5.0\User Agent

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\5.0\User Agent\Post Platform

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\User Agent

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\User Agent\Post Platform

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\5.0\User Agent

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\5.0\User Agent\Post Platform

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\User Agent

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\User Agent\Post Platform

Whereever you'll find the relevant entries, export the registry key

first *before* deleting the TaxWise (etc.) values.

True, but that doesn't make sense - from the user's perspective.

Well these are the first places I looked when you suggested "method 4". No

referance to TaxWise there at all. In fact those places in the registry look

a great deal like they do in my desktop.

I can find no reference to TaxWise anywhere in the registry. If fact when

searching my pc for those TaxWise values listed in the winware read out I

come up empty. They appear to be on my computer where I can't locate them

with the usual search tools.

I notice that on my desktop the Post Platform under 5.0 has the value "Media

Center PC 4.0" in addition to the same values as on my laptop. But there is

no similar identifier of the laptop in either of the user agents in the

registry on the laptop.

As I roam through this discussion group I see that this problem has happened

several times before but I have found no solution listed that seemed to work.

I may have to throw in the towel and call MS.

Thanks for all your support.

Hm, the ...\Internet Settings\5.0 keys aren't mentioned in the MSKB article

I linked to and that's the place where "dslman" found the very entries:

http://groups.google.com/groups?threadm=13B97D75-653A-46B3-B362-97281D23873D@microsoft.com

<quote>

I got to loking at what you told me about option four. I went back into

regedit and checked again under

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\microsoft\currentversion\internet settings and

there is also a user agent under internet setting besides the one under 5.0.

This is where all the taxwise notations were coming from.

Anyhow, you may want to export the whole

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings

you may like to mail to me.

Thanks for getting back.

I have looked all through the Internet Settings of the registry and there no

instances of TaxWise that part of the registry.

Here are the contents of the two keys in question.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet

Settings\User Agent\Post Platform

contains

(Default) REG_SZ (value not set)

AT&T CMS8.0 REG_SZ AT&T CMS8.0

AT&T CMS8.2 REG_SZ AT&T CMS8.2

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet

Settings\5.0\User Agent\Post Platform

contains

(Default) REG_SZ (value not set)

..NET CLR 1.1.4322 REG_SZ

..NET CLR 2.2.50727 REG_SZ

Can you tell me an easy to copy the whole Internet Settings keys

Ehm, start regedit.exe, open

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings

first, click on "File -> Export" and give the exported file a

senseful name like "HKLM-Internet Settings". Now open the

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings

key, click on "File -> Export" and give the exported file a sense-

ful name like "HKCU-Internet Settings".

Before mailing me *both* above exported REG files, it would be nice

if you could compress them into a ZIP file. How to that? Mark *both*

files, click with right mouse button on them and choose "Send To ->

ZIP compressed folder" (translated from German Windows XP, so the

correct term may be a little different on your machine). Now attach

the ZIP file onto an email to me so that I can have a look at.

Re: strange message from Windoes Update - it thinks my laptop is a

Freudi

Well what can I say - except thank you for staying with me on this.

I looked at your last reply and traced through the HKEY_CURRENT_USER hive

and I found two user-agents with a Post Platform - one under 5.0 and the

other under internet settings in internet setting key itself (ie same level

as 5.0). The one in the user agent under internet settings contained all of

the TaxWise entries.

You had asked for information in the HKEY_CURRENT USER as well as in

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. I apologize for not reading your earlier post more

carefully. Had I done so, (as you suggested) I would have found the TaxWise

entries a couple of days ago.

I don't like to mess around in the registery but this time it was necessary.

I exported and deleated all of the TaxWise keys leaving the Post Platform in

that user agent exactly as in my desk top.

Guess what. This corrected the problem (whatever it was) and I was able to

access Microsoft Update as I have always done in the past.

I don't know how or why all of the TaxWise keys showed up. (I have not used

that program since April 15, 2007.) And I don't know why it caused a problem.

Anyway things are back to normal.

Once again, thank you for all of your help. I learned a great deal working

with you on this problem.

Don...

I had the same problem you did (I saw your threads here) I've been using

Taxwise since 1998 in my tax practice. My hats off to you and Ottmar. I

called TaxWise technical support and passed your findings on to them.

I was relying on the 'Automatic' feature and never noticed I was not being

updated.

I suspect the culprit is/was a MS "Hotfix for Windows Media Player 11

(KB934683)", the update prior to the presumed onset. Do you find this hotfix

on your laptop and does the installation date precede the onset of the

problem?

I work with a group of computer innocents who do volunteer tax assistance

using TW. They might be running into this odd bit of behavior as they dust

off their laptops for a new season.
