It isn't listed in the help file. And i can't find any way to fix it. somebody help me out.f
Guest Gis Bun Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 You should contact Dell's support if unanswered here. Part of the support you are paying for is anything in Windows. Dell support can access your PC remotely to help you. Guest Vitamint10 Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 Already did that. was on the line for over 2 hours while the "help" did things that i told him i had already done. Then put me on hold often and eventually said he would call me back the next day after talking about it with others. He of course didn't call me back and wasted 2 hours of my life. So i ask again. Can somebody please help me with this? "Gis Bun" wrote: > You should contact Dell's support if unanswered here. Part of the support you > are paying for is anything in Windows. Isn't that helpful? } As usual error codes are meaningless without their context. Find where in the log that code in any of its representations is found. Then look before that. Activate verbose logging if necessary. Supplement the logging with ProcMon tracing if necessary. Good luck Robert Aldwinckle ---

That and Roberts suggestion of checking the logs is probably going to be the only way to figure out why you get the error. Guest RobAnt Posted March 24, 2008 Posted March 24, 2008 Does anyone, anywhere, know how to fix this error? I get it trying to run the Vista SP1 update. I have tried lots of things, from running CCleaner, downloading updated drivers for almost everything, disabling my firewall, anti-virus and spyware/trojan blocker. I've even tried uploading updated Vista media codecs. There is nothing, that I can see, remotely resembling a fix, and it would be useful to know exactly how widespread this is. So if you've got a Windows Live Messenger account, please post here. Simply login and reply. RobAnt +

Guest RobAnt Posted March 24, 2008 Posted March 24, 2008 Some of them look familiar. I forgot to mention that I've also tried the "delete the %windows%\softwaredistributio.etc.." directory delete fix.
Guest RobAnt Posted March 24, 2008 Posted March 24, 2008 Is there an easier way of entering hyperlinks than simply pasting them into the message - such as text to identify link .??
Guest RobAnt Posted March 24, 2008 Posted March 24, 2008 I also forgot to mention that I'm running VHP 32bit edition on a msi mobo with a core 2 duo & 2 gigs ram.
Guest RobAnt Posted March 24, 2008 Posted March 24, 2008 "TaurArian" I have read through, and checked your links, and it seems none of them have anything new to say about this problem. I'm sorry to say. I've read them all before and there is no practical help in resolving the error. Sorry my friend, but I'm really way ahead of of all those. Perhaps you ought to know that I've been worrying at this issue, like a rabid dog in a sheep pen, for the past week or two and have gotten no closer to resolving the issue.

It is the update log: This is just a summary log. I suspect you may get more details by trying to find other diagnostics from the same event. However, it sure looks like things are FUBAR. What exactly is implied by "tried"? And when? Notice that instead of downloading AU is trying to reuse already downloaded bundles for one update. If those are corrupt or complicated enough to run into bugs that could explain your symptom and redownloading it could either clear up the corruption or possibly make the downloaded package simpler (e.g. fewer bundles.) Depending on your objective you might just try doing a manual install of this update instead of trying to diagnose this symptom which I suspect is likely to be a problem with AU. Otherwise to get more insight on what these messages really mean, more particularly what AU is really doing during the download phase and before the install phase, I would invoke verbose logging wherever it is available and supplement those diagnostics with a ProcMon trace. Good luck Robert ---
Guest RobAnt Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 Robert, Thanks. That particular response may not have been the one directly after deleting the software distribution folder. What I am saying is that after deleting it, I still get the same error no. 80070057. My objective is simply to install Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista - that is all. I will delete the Software Distrtibution directory and try again. Then I'll post the error report here again. I have also tried a manual install after downloading the full 400mb odd package - but I guess I can try again. This time combining both deleting the SD directory. But I'm not very hopefull. Anyway, I'll post back here shortly. Rob +

Guest RobAnt Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 Hi again Robert Ok - so now I downloaded the full 434mb service pack from the MS Website. I once again stopped my firewall and anti virus, and enabled the Windows firewall and adjusted to recommended settings. Then I ran the service pack Windows6.0-KB936330-X86-wave0.exe. The update ran for about 5 or 6 minutes and disappeared without rebooting Windows. However disk accessing continued for about a further 10 minutes before slowing down to virtually no disk accessing. After a while I rebooted Windows. You will not that the update says the user declined to run update after rebooting. In fact I wasn't given the option. There were no error messages - it simply stopped. I am going to run this one again - but this time "As Administrator" (even though I am using an administrator account). However, here is the resulting log entries for this attempt: 2008-03-25 09:29:31:543 1012 17ec Shutdwn user declined update at shutdown 2008-03-25 09:29:31:544 1012 17ec AU AU initiates service shutdown 2008-03-25 09:29:31:544 1012 17ec AU ########### AU: Uninitializing Automatic Updates ########### 2008-03-25 09:29:31:897 1012 17ec Service ********* 2008-03-25 09:29:31:897 1012 17ec Service ** END ** Service: Service exit [Exit code = 0x240001] 2008-03-25 09:29:31:897 1012 17ec Service ************* 2008-03-25 09:33:43:516 1012 1288 Misc =========== Logging initialized (build: 7.0.6000.381, tz: -0000) =========== 2008-03-25 09:33:43:639 1012 1288 Misc = Process: C:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe 2008-03-25 09:33:43:813 1012 1288 Misc = Module: c:\windows\system32\wuaueng.dll 2008-03-25 09:33:43:516 1012 1288 Service ************* 2008-03-25 09:33:43:983 1012 1288 Service ** START ** Service: Service startup 2008-03-25 09:33:44:060 1012 1288 Service ********* 2008-03-25 09:34:19:115 1012 1288 Agent * WU client version 7.0.6000.381 2008-03-25 09:34:21:490 1012 1288 Agent * Base directory: C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution 2008-03-25 09:34:26:099 1012 1288 Agent * Access type: No proxy 2008-03-25 09:34:27:352 1012 1288 Agent * Network state: Connected 2008-03-25 09:35:27:351 1012 1288 Agent *********** Agent: Initializing Windows Update Agent *********** 2008-03-25 09:35:27:351 1012 1288 Agent *********** Agent: Initializing global settings cache *********** 2008-03-25 09:35:27:351 1012 1288 Agent * WSUS server: 2008-03-25 09:35:27:351 1012 1288 Agent * WSUS status server: 2008-03-25 09:35:27:351 1012 1288 Agent * Target group: (Unassigned Computers) 2008-03-25 09:35:27:351 1012 1288 Agent * Windows Update access disabled: No 2008-03-25 09:35:27:495 1012 1288 DnldMgr Download manager restoring 0 downloads 2008-03-25 09:35:27:495 1012 1288 AU ########### AU: Initializing Automatic Updates ########### 2008-03-25 09:35:27:496 1012 1288 AU # Approval type: Scheduled (User preference) 2008-03-25 09:35:27:496 1012 1288 AU # Scheduled install day/time: Every day at 3:00 2008-03-25 09:35:27:496 1012 1288 AU # Auto-install minor updates: Yes (User preference) 2008-03-25 09:35:27:497 1012 1288 AU Setting AU scheduled install time to 2008-03-26 03:00:00 2008-03-25 09:35:27:497 1012 1288 AU AU finished delayed initialization 2008-03-25 09:35:27:774 1012 1288 Report *********** Report: Initializing static reporting data *********** 2008-03-25 09:35:27:774 1012 1288 Report * OS Version = 6.0.6000.0.0.66304 2008-03-25 09:35:27:774 1012 1288 Report * OS Product Type = 0x00000003 2008-03-25 09:35:27:806 1012 1288 Report * Computer Brand = MSI 2008-03-25 09:35:27:806 1012 1288 Report * Computer Model = MS-7236 2008-03-25 09:35:27:808 1012 1288 Report * Bios Revision = V9.5 2008-03-25 09:35:27:808 1012 1288 Report * Bios Name = Default System BIOS 2008-03-25 09:35:27:808 1012 1288 Report * Bios Release Date = 2007-09-27T00:00:00 2008-03-25 09:35:27:808 1012 1288 Report * Locale ID = 2057 2008-03-25 10:50:59:041 1012 1288 Shutdwn user declined update at shutdown 2008-03-25 10:50:59:041 1012 1288 AU AU initiates service shutdown 2008-03-25 10:50:59:058 1012 1288 AU ########### AU: Uninitializing Automatic Updates ########### 2008-03-25 10:50:59:394 1012 1288 Service ********* 2008-03-25 10:50:59:394 1012 1288 Service ** END ** Service: Service exit [Exit code = 0x240001] 2008-03-25 10:50:59:394 1012 1288 Service ************* ** Ends ** Thanks for you attention to this. Guest RobAnt Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 Robert This is as far as I can go. My next option - unless you, or anyone else, can diagnose this and give me some sort of resolution - is to do a complete reinstallation of Vista. And I can't even guarantee that would resolve this issue, I would simply be doing it before installing any software. Anyway, here is another printout from the update log. I ran this as an administrator and left it for 3 hours before restarting my PC (I went to Tesco to get some new specs). By installing it manually you should be completely independent of the WU/AU distribution machinery. So you should be looking for alternate diagnostics (e.g. install log and verbose install log) from that. If you can't figure out the names of such diagnostics using simpler tools such as File Search (e.g. search for files changed on the day the update was run and then sort by timestamp), then you could use ProcMon to find them. > reinstallation of Vista. And I can't even guarantee that would resolve this > issue, I would simply be doing it before installing any software. > > Anyway, here is another printout from the update log. If I see anything new or interesting in it I'll comment further later. For now I strongly urge you (again) to try to find *alternate* diagnostics for your install attempts. Good luck Robert ---
Guest RobAnt Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 @ PA Bear I have tried to post a ticket on support.microsoft.com, as you suggest, but it doesn't work and implies that I should try data. However, I have been trying for quite some time - before your reply. Is there a UK equivalent? I will, of course, look at your other suggestions. Rob +

In fact I wasn't given the option. > > There were no error messages - it simply stopped. That might be analogous to a /quiet option. E.g. do the install under a non-admin account, notify the admin and do the final (copy) phase later. Again, I would expect to see some better clues for this in an _install_ log, not the WU/AU log. One of the biggest deficiencies in both the WU/AU log and the various update install logs IMO is that there is no record of whether the boot copy worked. What I have suggested installers could try to confirm this phase is: 1. check if boot-time copying is required. E.g. look in the update's install log or look in the Event log (e.g. using the Event Viewer) 2. If it is, before booting look in the registry for the list of modules to be copied and their respective targets: PendingFileRenameOperations 3. Capture that list. (It will disappear during the boot.) And use it to check the current versions and properties of the modules involved. E.g. use filever to expedite this task. 4. Do the boot. (One question I have always had but never had the courage or necessity to check, is if a safe mode boot would achieve the same copying? Then I think that I would do that instead of allowing potential interferers to be started at the same time.) A possible diagnostic for this step would be ProcMon's Boot Logging option. 5. (Post boot:) Use the list of modules captured in step 3 to repeat those checks. If a target now doesn't have the same attributes that the source had you would have an explanation for why an update keeps being reoffered. > > I am going to run this one again - but this time "As Administrator" (even > though I am using an administrator account). > > However, here is the resulting log entries for this attempt: .... Still irrelevant I think. ) Robert ---

Guest RobAnt Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 Hi Robert, I've managed to post this problem with Microsoft Support, which has taken a series of diagnostics automatically. I think I've reached the end of my personal technical skill with regard to this problem, being a Novell guy with no real training in advanced MS diagnostics. Frankly it would be a lot easier to diagnose if there was a meaningful explanation of the error code. Unfortunately that's not the case. Thaniks for your, and everyone elses help and if anyone thinks they can shed any further light on the problem then please do. If anyone would like any further information, then please leave a message for me on my website http://www.ramms.myby.co.uk - there is a contact link leading to an email form there. Thanks again, Rob +
