I have this problem, too, and had a live chat with Microsoft tonight

only to be told that I'll be called back in a few days so I don't have a

sloution yet. I did copy all of the files that Darrell Gorter suggested

and if anyone would like to look at them I will send them to you.

Calling Microsoft is definitely the way to go, although the procedure

may be lengthy. After two hours a Microsoft tech got my computer

bootable. There are other issues with the computer regarding updates,

but that is another topic. If you are still stuck at update 3 of 3 I

would suggest contacting Microsoft.

I woke up to exactly the same problem on BOTH my own Dell desktop and my

wife's Medion laptop this morning. Both PCs booted into an endless lop of

'Configuring updates, stage 3 of 3' after downloading yesterdays package of

updates.

 

I've got the PCs running again by booting from the Vista installation disk,

choosing repair my computer' and then the 'Use Windows Restore' option to go

back to the last restore point.

 

Both the PCs then booted normally. The next thing I did was to turn off

Windows update on both PCs until I can find the update that is the source of

my problem!

 

My question to everybody is which update caused the problem and how do I

install it successfully?

Hi I have had the same problem and with some help have managed to get out of

it, Here goes have to bare with me as I am not very techi ok

 

Right here goes turn off comp when you turn it back on again keep pressing F

5 then when that window comes up then press F8 then go to the option to repair

once there go to who ever name is signed o to the comp i.e who ever is the

administrator this then will get you to be able to take it back to the

restore point.

 

I hope this helps. I have a Toshiba lap top. What I got told was that vist

even in safe mode will continue to try to load the updates not like xp. where

you could get back to the restore point easily.

Hi,

 

I have upgraded my home premium to Ultimate and updated all windows update.

 

The i have tried vista SP1 , when its installing the stage 3 it was keep on

rebooting.

 

I have tried to start in all the modes ...but it still doing the

installation and restarting.

 

When i checked with my recovery disc, windows not showing any restore point.

 

I dont want to loose any data in the laptop ...So i didnt recover my laptop

to its original state.

 

Then i tried to do the things in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949358

 

I put my vista upgrade DVD and tried to do the 3rd step from the above link

 

when i do On the System Recovery Options page, click Command Prompt.

 

 

My system shows x:\sources

 

How can i do the Use the System Recovery options to rename the Pending.xml

file and edit the registry:

 

Pl let me know...I am worried

I have started from the vista DVD and went to the option system recovery

option...When i open up the command prompt it shows x:\sources and then i

have tried ren %windir%\winsxs\pending.xml pending.old

 

it shows system couldnt find the file.

 

I dont have any restore points too...Not able to start in any modes when we

press F2..All the options are just rebooting....

 

I dont want to reinstall my vista to loose all my data...

 

Please help me out....I am just wondering that drive x:\ is the windows

drive???

 

How i can logon to the vista Ultimate...
