Guest Laz777 Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 since the latest rounds of updates, my system has seen a significant drop in performance. simply having winamp open and playing solitaire makes my computer logy as hell. I open task manager and my cpu is spiked at 100%, then it will drop to about 45 a second or two later. I have XP Media Center Edition 2002 SP2 with all current security updates, as of 8/15/07 Toshiba Satellite LS35 series, Intel Celeron M 410 1.46GHz, 1 GB RAM. I regularly clean my system deleting temp files, old install files, I defrag and use a registry cleaner about twice a week. I do believe this is update related...possibly .NET framework issues, seeing how that was the main theme of the last round of updates.
Guest TaurArian [MS-MVP] Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 The Svchost.exe process may spike the CPU usage to 100 percent during update detection or update installation. Also, the Svchost.exe process causes the computer to stop responding for various lengths of time. See: When you use Automatic Updates to scan for updates or to apply updates to applications that use Windows Installer, you experience issues that involve the Svchost.exe process http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932494 -- ==================================== TaurArian [MS-MVP] 2005-2008 - Australia ==================================== How to make a good post: http://www.dts-l.org/goodpost.htm Defending your machine: http://defendingyourmachine2.blogspot.com/ http://taurarian.mvps.org/index.htm Emails will not be acknowledged - please post to the newsgroup so all may benefit. Guest Laz777 Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 thank you TaurAurian, but the problem is not with the update process itself, but the aftermath of the update process. My system performance was seriously degraded after updating. Guest Laz777 Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 I believe I've found the source of the problem, and to me it's a one that I wouldn't have thought to begin with. I said in my original post that I had winamp and solitaire open and my computer was real slow. I didn't say that I was playing an mp3. I don't have many mp3's, what music there is on my harddrive is rips I've done myself and encoded with FLAC, a lossless audio codec. I have a few hard-to-find mp3's on my system, and was having the slowdown only when I played them. I discovered the root of my problem when I played a FLAC file and my system ran as good as always. Now I've got to figure out why mp3's do this. I could just convert the few I have over, but I'd rather get to the reason the problem occurs and I'll have to find another forum to discuss it. Thanks again for your response TaurAurian. "Laz777" wrote: > thank you TaurAurian, but the problem is not with the update process itself, > but the aftermath of the update process. Guest TaurArian [MS-MVP] Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 Thanks for the update Laz777. At least we know now it's not a WU issue. Good luck in finding out the cure for the problem with the MP3s. -- ==================================== TaurArian [MS-MVP] 2005-2008 - Australia ==================================== How to make a good post: http://www.dts-l.org/goodpost.htm Defending your machine: http://defendingyourmachine2.blogspot.com/ http://taurarian.mvps.org/index.htm Emails will not be acknowledged - please post to the newsgroup so all may benefit.
