Guest Dave Horne Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 I'm using Vista Home Premium and just installed the IDT Audio IDT High Definition Audio CODEC update today. After rebooting I have no playback devices. I can not Skype, can not play back CDs or listen to the internet radio. In addition, when I look at installed updates to remove an update, this particular one is not listed. Suggestions?
Guest realcestmoi Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 Hi there, Never take drivers from windows update unless they are intended for Microsoft hardware. If an updated driver is needed because the hardware does not work proper go to the manufacturers website to look for an updated driver. If it ain't broke: do not try to"FIX" it. If you did take the optional drivers from windows update try booting last known good configuration, rolling back on the driver or use system restore or do a windows repair installation or restore from the system backup you hopefully made. Guest Dave Horne Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 Hi. thanks for the advice. I first went to Device Manager (before reading anyadvice here) and removed that update per Windows instructions (provided somewhere in Windows Update, clicking to MS site and reading some basic stuff). I removed that driver, rebooted and was told that I needed new drivers. Windows then reinstalled the same driver and I had the same problem. I then went to 'Backup and Restore Center' and reinstalled the settings from days before (I just got back from a short vacation). Now everything seems to be back to normal. Lesson learned, thanks. Guest Clayton Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 I updated this update thinking it will fix my problem, sometimes when I am playing music with windows media player and then close media player it would still be playing, I need to close wmp but ctrl/alt/delete. But disabled by audio drivers like everyone else. I've taken drivers from Windows Update more than once, on a selection of different machines, and never had any problems. I think 99% is a little bit of an overestimate. (Are you talking about the specific scenario where the currently installed driver is non-Microsoft and Windows Update replaces it with a Microsoft driver? It isn't quite clear from your wording.) In general terms, if given the choice between a Microsoft driver and a third-party driver, I'd try the Microsoft driver first and only install the third-party driver if I was having problems. Harry.

Good lord. You MUST be kidding... You should ALWAYS go the the manufacturer's site for drivers. MS is clueless about other mgfrs hardware drivers and the resulting mess of not applying the proper ones in the proper way. Last month, the mess was all about an Intel video driver that users let AU download. This month, it appears to be the IDT thing. Next month, ? > > Harry.

Guest Dave Horne Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 I'll add a follow up to this and my now solved problem. After I reverted to an earlier 'restore' I tried to recreate this same problem by going into Device Manager and update my Sigma Tel High Definition Audio CODEC. After updating the driver I of course had the problem I wrote here about. So instead of using System Restore, I used Roll Back Driver in Device Manager (Under Sound, video and games). To my surprise that didn't solve my problem and I was still left with no Audio Playback devices. I was forced again to use System Restore. I'm not a Windows wiz though I've been using Windows for about 15 years. Had this problem happened to my wife (and countless others) a lot of time would have been wasted while they would have tried to figure out how to solve this. A problem like this should not have occured _and_ rolling back the driver using that option in Device Manager should have worked _but_ it didn't. Just passing this on ... perhaps someone else can benefit from the time I spent on this. What else can I do? Jim Try this ... I'm certainly not an expert, but if this works, let me know - reboot your computer but first unplug your speakers and anything in your headphone output. Reboot again and plug everything back in. It's possible Windows might 'see' the items on the second attempt. I'm back to normal but I may try this myself (after first creating a new Restore point).
Guest L_tree Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 This update appears to be part of the "fix" for those of us with sound cards that will not update to vista sp1. (I have a gateway with a sigmatel driver). If your sound is gone after the update (and it seems everyones is) Contact your computer hardware support, they should be able to point you to a sound driver. Download that driver and re-install. Note that the gateway one is "unsigned", but accept it anyway. Sound should come back. Don't hit check for updates on the microsoft automatic update button, (I did and it gave me the same IDT codec update, suspect I might have to redo the steps to get rid of it). Hopefully the vista sp1 update should become available. "Dave Horne" wrote: > I'm using Vista Home Premium and just installed the IDT Audio IDT High > Definition Audio CODEC update today. Guest Craymo Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 Re: IDT Audio IDT High Definition Audio CODEC took out my audio JAK.... I'd suggest you reboot and try again after 10 minutes or so. I had a similar issue after the update came through last night. First I tried to roll back the driver in the Control Panel, then rebooting but that didn't work. Then I attempted system restore to the point just prior to installing the update. All seemed well, but then it said that the restore was not successful. I rebooted again, then I allowed Windows Defender to do it's thing (apparently it runs automatically every time my system starts). Once I was sure there was nothing running in the background, (anti-virus, etc) I attempted system restore again. I didn't touch it until I knew for sure that it was finished. That did the trick! I am back to where I was prior to the update and my sound is working just fine. Also, while I realize this forum is not to debate the point of whether to download from Microsoft or manufacturer's websites, I DO want to make a general observation in this regard. I went to the manufacturer's site for this particular update. They recommend that you do your updates from Microsoft before attempting to get the update there. In my opinion, the most prudent thing to do would be to update via Microsoft. If there are issues, and they can't be resolved through Microsoft, THEN go directly to the manufacturer. I agree that Microsoft written devices and updates are probably most likely to be preferable. In fact, since I began using computers back in the 'old days', the biggest issues I have ever had with drivers was when I installed outside of the Microsoft Update platform. Oh, and many people do not have the knowledge or skills to choose the correct drivers from often complicated manufacturer's websites. Just my 2 cents worth. Not so clear! Start by defining "non MS driver". A driver for hardware that wasn't produced by Microsoft? A driver that wasn't written by Microsoft? Do you mean when the original driver is non-MS and the new driver is MS? When the original driver and the new driver are both non-MS? When the original driver is MS and the new driver is non-MS? All three? > So drivers should be taken from the manufacturer only. I disagree. My experience with Windows tells me that the best bet is the driver built into the operating system, when there is one. Adding drivers written by the hardware manufacturer is an invitation to pain. (Of course, in many cases you don't have any option.) ... are you talking about Windows Vista in particular? Harry.
Guest blaster009 Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 I'm sick and tired of this. Dell is full of morons. Microsoft is full of goons. The next computer I buy will be one I build from scratch, and it's going to be running Linux. Thank you Microsoft for killing my PC experience, you won't be seeing another dollar from me. It's hilarious because today's the day they announce their "Vista has a bad reputation" push.
Guest Kyra Pryde Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 Helloes people, ....I'm new here but I'm writing here because I am also having the same problem. Because of being oh so trusting with the Windows Update, it created this problem. I've been reading the conversation about this problem and right now I'm waiting for the backup to finish. I'm kinda of clueless of my technology now that this happen. I'm usually up-to-date, making sure it's free of viruses, clean and everything but this has gone way too far. Guest Nathan Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 I have the same problem of installing the IDT Audio IDT High Defiintion Audio Codec with Vista Home Premium and the sound didn't work. I tried various things which apparently created restore points so now when I go to backup and restore there are no restore points left for before the update. Simply uninstalling the driver and reinstalling the correct one does not solve the problem - I have no sound on my laptop. Interestingly, when I boot up my maching when connected to my tv tuner I have sound. When I boot up not connected to my tv tuner I have no sound. Are there any solutions to this problem other than restoring to an earlier time? Or can I get a restore point from an earlier time even though Backup and Restore does not show one? Thanks
Guest Dave Horne Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 Follow up - I went to the Dell site (http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/ ) and under Desktop \ Audio there is one thread on page 1 ( http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums...thread.id=83029 ) that gives some of us the option to download another SigmaTel driver, one that is approved by SP1. Read that post carefully. After I installed that particular driver (via Dell), I was then offered SP1 to download. Initially I forgot to disable my McAfee Firewall\ AV when installing that SP1 (and rec'd a 80041315 error) , once I disabled McAfee the SP1 installed flawlessly. DH Windows update is pushing this update out automatically. I experienced the exact same thing David Horne did. I installed, rebooted then no sound. Vista said "no sound device installed" System properties confirmed this. style_emoticons//sad.gif So I rollback the driver... No joy there either. I was also forced to use System Restore to get things working again. MS should not be pushing out drivers that don't work at all. And rolling back a driver should fix it. So something else must be wrong as well. Someone at Microsoft needs to look closely at this update because its very flawed and is going to cause a ton of problems for the newbie users who probably isn't going to even know how to rollback his drivers, which doesn't work anyways. Lets hope they know about System Restore. System specs in case anyone from MS reads this: Dell Inspiron 1501 AMD Turion 64X2 Mobile CPU 2 gigs of RAM 110 GB hard drive onboard sound: SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC Vista Home Premium
