windows updates don't install

Recommended Posts

followed the thread from Resonator80 earlier today, having the same issue.

I have 44 updates to install, and they have downloaded, but fail to install

each time. I get this message in the windowsupdate.log: "warning WU client

failed installing updates with error 0x80240020"... so, I search for that

error, and get KB910341. for XP, step 1 says to log on as a local

administrator. fine, all three users are administrators. step 2 tells me

to look for some registry entries in this subkey:

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows

NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\SensLogn" except, that computer doesn't

have a Senslogn subkey.

now what?

XP Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 2 (it says. dunno where to get

the build info...)

thanks, Dan

Mine neither. (Re)installing Windows Update Agent 3.0 with parameter

"/wuforce" is something you've tried already?

Yep, tried that earlier. I even went and (manually) added all the registry

info in KB910341. STILL doesn't work...

since I'm posting this from another machine, I can't copy/paste, but here

are the errors from windowsupdate.log:

warning: GetUserTokenFromSessionId failed with error 800704dd for session 0

warning: exit code 0x80240020

warning WU client failed installing updates with error 0x80240020

>>-- RESUMED -- COMAPI: Install [ClientID = MicrosoftUpdate]

Install call failed

Reboot required = no

warning: exit code 0x80240FFF Call error code = 0x80240020

----------

-- END -- COMAPI: Install [ClientID = MicrosoftUpdate]

-----------

WARNING: Operation failed due to earlier error, hr=80240020

(end)

I don't know if this will help but it has for me in the past.

Instead of getting the updates from auto updates go to the update site and

uncheck the update you note is an issue KB910341 download and install the

rest see if it works. If that works you may be able to do the last update

once the others are done.

problem is, I can't get even a single one to update. none of them, either

singly, or in a group, or automatically, will update...

thanks for the idea though...

well, I sorta got it to work. after a bit of searching, the

"GetUserTokenFromSessionId" issue has a workaround. the auto update

"feature" doesn't require a user token, I guess... so, I turned the

autoupdate back on, set it for the next hour, and walked away. an hour

later, all those updates that I couldn't for the life of me get to install,

were installed. so, I appear to be up to date now...

some solution, huh?

If windows updates fail to install

First of all make sure your Time is set correct on your Computer ( you will

find in the Right-bottom of the screen).

Open a run command and try to Re-register these DLLs for the update Engine:

net stop wuauserv click [OK]

regsvr32 wuapi.dll click [OK]

regsvr32 wuweb.dll click [OK]

regsvr32 atl.dll click [OK]

regsvr32 wups2.dll click [OK]

regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll click [OK]

regsvr32 wups.dll click [OK]

regsvr32 MSXML3.dll click [OK]

regsvr32 wucltui.dll click [OK]

regsvr32 wuaueng.dll click [OK]

net start wuauserv click [OK]

Also Turn any firewall and Defender off for the Update (please turn ON after

the

update either success or failure) Then Reboot your machine and try the

Updates.

You receive an access violation error and the system may appear to become

unresponsive when you try to install an update from Windows Update or from

Microsoft Update

Thank you so much. I am having exact same problem you describe, same error

message, no "Senslogn" key and have tried MANY things. Nothing has worked. I

will now try the fix you posted here. I have blown HOURS AND HOURS on this!

tried all perturbations on that (having same problem as dano here). Tried

only the first, only the last, all but the first, one from the middle at

random. NOTHING WORKS.
