Problems with XP Service Pack 2

I went to the Microsoft Update part of the site and it said that I had the

high-priority update to XP Service Pack 2 to install. The information read

Download size (total): 0 KB *

Estimated time at your connection speed: 0 minutes *

(*Downloaded ready to install)

so I clicked on the install update button, accepted the terms, and it

seemingly began to install (i.e. the green install bar moved all the way

down) but as soon as it finished, it said that Windows XP Service Pack 2 had

not been installed.

Does anyone know what is wrong or how to fix this?

Hi Jeremy. The best way to verify what the Windows Update procedure failure

is telling you is to obtain the update itself downloaded to your machine and

install it. Now the likely place for the SP2 that you have already

downloaded is in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download. You should find

a exe file in there called WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe or you can get it

here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=049c9dbe-3b8e-4f30-

8245-9e368d3cdb5a&DisplayLang=en

Run that. It will likely fail but the error message you get will be more

explanatory then what you get through the Windows Update site. Post that

error message here.

Download SP2 from the MS Download site and install manually
