Guest Mark M Morse Posted August 27, 2007 Posted August 27, 2007 Hi: After scanning a few posts in this newsgroup, I discovered the existence of the WindowsUpdate.log file, but I need assistance interpreting its contents. For many months, I have successfully updated an older notebook running Windows 2000. The July updates installed without incident, and the system was not used until I went to check for August updates. There are six critical updates at the Microsoft Update web site, and the steps proceed okay until the downloads begin. Each download status ends with "Download Failed" instead of "Done!". What follows below my signature is what I think to be the applicable section of the WindowsUpdate.log file. Does this information tell any readers what I should try next? (Note: I cut out some lines that are simply three additional attempts to resume each download ending with a notice that no more attempts will be made, and replaced them with < snip >.) Thanks a lot, ~ Mark 2007-08-20 21:03:22:998 1356 4ac DnldMgr * Updates to download = 6 2007-08-20 21:03:23:028 1356 4ac Agent * Title = Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - August 2007 Guest Mark M Morse Posted August 30, 2007 Posted August 30, 2007 Hi Freudi: Thanks for your post. I retried four times over the past three days, and the issue remains. On the last attempt today, I took another Windows 2000 laptop that has not been used for a few months, and I tried to update both systems side-by-side while they accessed the Internet using the same network. The old laptop updated without incident, but the problematic one still failed at the download stage with the same error in the log file. Since both machines used the same network and were at Microsoft Update at the same time, I'm thinking something is wrong with the computer's data. I looked at the KB link that you suggested, but it instructs to use Microsoft Update, and that download fails, too. Is there another way to update the Root Certificates, or do you have any other suggestions? Thanks, ~ Mark Ottmar Freudenberger wrote, in part: > > That's a time out error, the server cannot be reached. > > http://support.microsoft.com/kb/924123 > Installing the Root Certificates update may resolve the issue. > Mark M Morse wrote, in part: >> >> 2007-08-20 21:03:25:051 1356 580 DnldMgr Error 0x80072efe >> occurred >> while downloading update notifying dependent calls. >> >> 2007-08-20 21:03:34:655 1296 3d8 COMAPI - WARNING: Exit code = >> 0x00000000 Call error code = 0x80240022

The download of what? The Windows Update Client or the Root Certificates? > Is there another way to update the Root Certificates, Direct download URL for Windows 2000: http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3-19990518/cabpool/rootsupd_d54d141df0fb4e29d557f8765c13165.exe Bye, Freudi
Guest Mark M Morse Posted August 30, 2007 Posted August 30, 2007 Hi Freudi: The resolution in KB924123 instructs to update the root certificates using the Microsoft Update web site. That did not succeed. Tomorrow, I will try the second URL that you provided. Thanks! ~ Mark PS: I'm not sure what "Windows Update Client" means. Is this another name for the Microsoft Update web site? Guest Mark M Morse Posted September 2, 2007 Posted September 2, 2007 In the end, it did not work. I used the URL. I downloaded the file rootsupd_d54d141df0fb4e29d557f8765c13165.exe. When I try to execute this file, nothing happens. I deleted the file and retried I got the same result. ~ Mark Ottmar Freudenberger wrote: > > Did it work?

Guest Mark M Morse Posted September 8, 2007 Posted September 8, 2007 Hi Freudi: [i'm glad that you can see my post(s) the last post in this thread that is visible to me has timestamp 09-06-2007 0245.] I live with all of Microsoft's shortcomings. What else can I do? (rhetorical) My point is that it is not normal to develop software intended mostly for non-technical end-users that provides no output whatsoever. Anyway, back at the farm, the root certificate update (assuming that this file actually executed and accomplished what is intended) did not resolve the issue. Do you have any other suggestions? Guest Mark M Morse Posted September 9, 2007 Posted September 9, 2007 Hi Freudi: I'd rather drink hot lead it's so much easier to wipe the hard drive, reinstall Windows 2000, do the updates (which I am confident will work because the corruption created by the Microsoft Update web site will be gone), and restore my programs and data. I appreciate your efforts. Vielen Dank, ~ Mark Ottmar Freudenberger wrote, in part: > > You may wish to open a call with MS's PSS.
