Error 800703F9

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium. I am stuck in an endless

loop with an error code of 800703F9. I have searched Google and

Microsoft support and that error code does not come up. Has anybody

seen it before or have any idea how I might fix this problem? There

were about 3 updates which always gave me that error. Now, windows

wants to update Windows update, but I am stuck in a loop and it won't

update.

Thanks for any help you can offer me.

Jeff,

See if you can update the Windows Update software by opening Internet

Options in the Control Panel [with IE *closed*, please]

Click the Programs tab

Click the Manage Add-ons button

Locate WUWebControl Class and click once on it to highlight it

Now click the Update ActiveX button

[The above works in XP, not sure about Vista]

Did the ActiveX component update successfully ?

If yes, than see if IE can access the Windows Update site now.

Windows Update is not an ActiveX control in Vista. It is a standalone

program that runs. When you go to Tools Windows Update in IE, it just

runs this Windows Update program now, outside of IE.

Vista not installed here, Jeff. Was just thinking that the latest

Version of the Windows Update Agent is attempting to install and can

not. Thus, the suggestion to see if the ActiveX component of it could be

updated via Internet Options, Manage add-ons.

Since MS has yet to publish meaningful documentation on Vista specific

error codes, that was a 'reach' on my part <w>

Sorry about that.

If you get it sorted out, please post the resolution here so that we can

spread it around, so to speak.

I have opened up a trouble ticket from a link I saw on a different

message posted to this newsgroup. I am currently working with the

support person through e-mail to find the problem. The first round of

options did not work. So, I am waiting to hear back to see what other

options they want me to test.

Thanks for your help. I will post the results when I get the problem

resolved.

You're mowst welcome, Jeff. I'm sure there are others who would like to

know just what that error code represents and how to resolve it.

And, thanks for contacting MS to let them know about this.

They really do want to help out, contrary to what some folks think.

Not really. After numerous suggestions from the Microsoft tech, none

of which worked, I finally did a clean install of Vista again. I even

tried to do an upgrade install over my existing installation, but that

also failed. Now everything is working correctly. The clean install

really sucked because I had to reinstall everything. But, now the

updates are working and the system just seems to be operating better

all the way around.
