Guest Jason Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 It's kinda odd but I haven't received any Microsoft Updates in a long time. I am using XP Pro. I have 2 laptops and a desktop and none of them have had updates in a while. Are they focusing on Vista and just not rolling out updates or has everything leveled out.

Visit (in Internet Explorer) the following website: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ If it bothers you to click on links - use the one built into Internet Explorer: Tools --> Windows Updates Once you get there - let it install whatever it says you need to install to get ready to scan for updates. Then using custom options - scan for and install the updates you feel you need. Check your automatic update settings as well. -- Shenan Stanley MS-MVP -- How To Ask Questions The Smart Way http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html
Guest Jason Posted August 29, 2007 Posted August 29, 2007 Yea lol I have done that as well on both laptops and desktop (click on Updates or go to Microsoft.com) again with no updates "Shenan Stanley" wrote: > Jason wrote: > > It's kinda odd but I haven't received any Microsoft Updates in a > > long time. Guest Jason Posted August 29, 2007 Posted August 29, 2007 Yes my automatic updates are set on both laptops and desktop to download but not to install until I say so. But I would always see a yellow shield in the lower right hand corner when there are updates. This isn't user ignorance I am an IT administrator so I know my way around a computer. Okay - that would have been useful information long ago in this conversation - maybe. It is not promising that you are an IT Administrator and don't know (assuming from your original post) that updates have been released the second tuesday of each month consistently for a few months now. However - that could have just been an over-sight. Just in case you do not know how to get a list of updates from a given month: You can see the critical (security and other) patches released for a given month using the following: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms##-***.mspx At the end of this line you see "ms##-***.mspx" .. If you simply replace ## with the two-digit year and the *** with the three character month abbreviation, you will see the list of "critical" and "important" patches for that month (since it only happens once a month usually, if you check by the second Tuesday (wait until afternoon) of each month - you should be fine) - note that future months will not work. As an example... December 2004's patches.. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms04-dec.mspx March 2005's patches.. None released.. so that one will fail... May 2006's patches.. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-may.mspx January 2007's patches.. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms07-jan.mspx However - all that does not help answering the last question from the previous post... Control Panel --> Add or Remove Programs --> Check the "Show Updates" box and scroll down - when was the last update installed? It might be useful knowing when the last update was installed. It would at least give us a timeframe. You can also use the above information (how to find out what updates were released in a given month) to compare what you have installed with what you should have... Being an IT Administrator - you might want to sign up for: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/notify.mspx And just maybe: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/advisory/default.mspx Come back and let us know what patches - if any - from the last XX number of months you are missing. We can then - if necessary - look at your update logs, etc. -- Shenan Stanley MS-MVP -- How To Ask Questions The Smart Way http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html

We can then - if necessary - > look at your update logs, etc. If you find out you are missing some - re-registering the DLLs and doing a little Windows Update cleanup couldn't hurt... Try this: Get Dial-a-Fix: http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix Use its options to fix: - Windows Installer - Windows Update - All the Registration Center options. Turn off the "Empty System32\Catroot 2" Do NOT do "Flush SoftwareDistribution". Then click "GO" and wait until it is done... Reboot may be needed. - Download/Install Windows Update v3. http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237 (You may need to install it using the command line switch "/wuforce" right after an additional reboot - immediately after logging in.) - Download/Install the 927891 patch. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=7A81B0CD-A0B9-497E-8A89-404327772E5A - Reboot. - Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and scan for/install updates. - Come back and let us know how things went! -- Shenan Stanley MS-MVP -- How To Ask Questions The Smart Way http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html
Guest Jason Posted August 30, 2007 Posted August 30, 2007 This is so weird I set up ALL my computers to Download the updates but let me choose when to install them. However after following your advise on going to the Add & Remove Programs and show updates I saw I had an update on 08/29 which I know that I didnt install. So I went to my Automatic Update program and it had been changed on ALL computers. It now said Download and Install automatically. I know I didnt change that setting and noone else can because I am the admin. SO the question is was there an update that changed that setting??? ummmm. Well thanks for the help in getting this resolved "Shenan Stanley" wrote: > Jason wrote: > > It's kinda odd but I haven't received any Microsoft Updates in a > > long time. I am using XP Pro.
