I just got this in from TechRepublic, this is going to affect all Windows

users, I think.

http://news.com.com/2100-7350_3-6205191.html?tag=nl.e019.

Do you think this is the cause of all the problems that are occurring with

the updates.

I have been using Microsoft Baseline Sercurity Analzyer 2.0 to update my

computer and I am not having any trouble with doing it that way. But IE7

still freezes up when I am browsing the web.

I got a reply from support yesterday, and done all the steps to correct the

problem that we are all having and could not fix the problem and then today

this article came. What's up with this?

Unrelated. You are looking for relationships that do not exist.

Do you think there is some sort of virus going around with so many of us

having the same identical problem. Mine started last week with SP2 being

completely deleted and not working, but still showing up in the add & remove

section, I deleted it and inserted the CD and re-installed it and got

everything back to working and to my surprise the automatic updates quick

working.

I get the error number: 0x80070020 when I go to the update page.

Support wrote that the Windows Update Services are corrupted, and gave me

some steps to follow: 1 Disable all third party software 2 make sure

automatic update is started with Automatic Start. 3. make sure BITs is

started with Automatic Start. Next Run the SFC with the command SFC

/purgecache and SFC /scannow, which I done all of that to only have the same

problem. Then after doing all of that they asked me for my MSINFO32 file and

WindowsUpdate.log to see what the problem maybe.

I haven't heard back from them since sending them the files this morning.

So what do you think is the problem that we are having.

Can you quantify 'so many of us'?

Got Spybot Search and Destroy installed?

No Shenan Stanley,

I cannot quantify so many of us, but you have put me

in quandary as to what the problem that so many of

us are here looking for the answer that will fix this.

As for the quantitative of this, why are we all talking about

the same problem?

I did have Spybot Search and Destroy installed until I got

the email from support, and removed it. It did not change

a thing.

It seems that you have the answer to this, if so please share it!

We will so much appreciate having it. Help us out! I won't be

mad at you.

By the way Windows Defender and Live OneCare is updating fine,

but the other problems still exist.

Checked out the link below and it does nothing to

fix the problem.

Now you have put me in quandary even more, as to the quantitative.

If you have the answer, share it!

That's the problem - I don't believe there are that 'many of' you... with

the same problem. Yours is unique because you reinstalled SP2. Others will

be unique because they performed a full repair installa. Others will be

unique because they performed a clean installa dnafter they installed SP2

they have 76+ updates they cannot install.

> As for the quantitative of this, why are we all talking about

> the same problem?

Who know - likely not. However - a simple search for similar problems

*might* lead to an answer,

> I did have Spybot Search and Destroy installed until I got

> the email from support, and removed it. It did not change

> a thing.

The email told you to remove it? I thought it told you to 'disable all

third party software', not uninstall. -)

> It seems that you have the answer to this, if so please share it!

> We will so much appreciate having it. Help us out! I won't be

> mad at you.

Why would you be mad at you at all for trying to help you?

> By the way Windows Defender and Live OneCare is updating fine,

> but the other problems still exist.

Just because they are made by Microsoft does not mean they share the same

mechanisms for updating. And in this case - I would conside them as much

'third party software' as anything else.

Try this:

Get Dial-a-Fix:

http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

Use its options to fix:

- Windows Installer

- Windows Update

- All the Registration Center options.

Turn off the "Empty System32\Catroot 2"

Do NOT do "Flush SoftwareDistribution".

Then click "GO" and wait until it is done... Reboot may be needed.

- Download/Install Windows Update v3.

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237

(You may need to install it using the command line switch "/wuforce" right

after an additional reboot - immediately after logging in.)

- Download/Install the 927891 patch.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=7A81B0CD-A0B9-497E-8A89-404327772E5A

- Reboot.

- Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and scan for/install updates.

- Come back and let us know how things went!

Did you Disable Spybot's TeaTimer prior to uninstalling it ? If not, the

'protection' that Spybot provided may still be present, eg. the Default

security setting for a registry hive were altered by Spybot and are

still in that state.

Solving setup errors by using the SubInACL tool to repair file and

registry permissions

http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2006/09/04/739820.aspx

That blog article describes the scenario. IF this is the case, Spybot's

'protection' was not Disabled prior to uninstaling it, the quickest way

to resolve this would be to reinstall Spybot, disable TeaTimer AND

SDHelper [ Mode > Advanced Mode Resident > UNcheck the boxes next for

both ], then uninstall Spybot.

I disabled it Spybot as the support email instructed me to first, followed

all the

instructions to the letter.

Then and only then did I uninstall Spybot.

I completed each step as instructed in the email and it still has not solved

the problem.

I never used TeaTimer as I don't like the way it worked from the first time

I used it.

I don't want to loose some of the work I am doing so I elected not to do a

fresh install of the OS just now.

I am going over the last thing I was doing when this all started.

In fact this is what happened, I was reading some email from Kevin Yank

about PHP

in Windows Live Desktop Mail when the red shield jumped up in the task bar

saying

this version of Windows is not supported, advising me to update to SP2.

Which I already had.

After checking the Add and Remove program it was still there, but not

working. So I done a system repair, removed the old copy of SP2 and put in

the SP2 CD reinstalled it, and all the updates were working again.

Whatever happened seems to have happened to a lot of us, by reading the post

here I see that some are saying the same thing that I am experencing but did

not include in my post.

So before I push the panic button and do a fresh install that would take me

a week to get back to where I am, I elected to look for a solution to fix the

problem. But it don't look like I will find it here, as I have already been

to most of the places and done most of the suggestions that I have read.

Nothing has worked as of yet.

But I do want to thank everyone for their help in this matter.

I read all of the information that I could find before I even posted here.

To clarify this thread, the issue is that IE7 freezes on the web, correct ?

The system can NOT update successfully, correct ?

You installed SP2, 'something' removed it, but it's still listed in

Add/Remove Programs, and can be uninstalled, correct ?

What is the installed antivirus software and was it actively monitoring

the system when SP2 and IE7 were installed ?
