Unable to get rid of update installation reminder

I am running XP Home (Service Pack 2). My automatic update is telling me

there is one update ready to install. I accept this and am then told that

the installation has been successful, but then a few minutes later the update

icon reappears. I have accessed Windows Update website and run a manual

update scan, and am told that there is one critical upate (the same as the

one in the icon) - I download it, receive the message that it has installed

successfully, but the icon still remains.

I have been running ZoneAlarm Internet Security (v7) and the free AVG virus

software with no problems up to now. However, I have just dowloaded the free

version of PC Tools Spyware Doctor and this is when the problem seems to have

started (could be a complete coincidence).

Any advice (in layman's terms!) would be much appreciated.

Known issues.

Disable/uninstall PC Tools Spyware Doctor and see if that fixes the issue and allows the

updates to install properly.

I have the same problem with the update icon alway appearing, but says my

updates are successful. My simple question is since the icon is still there

is the update really successful? I would rather not uninstall the PC Tools

that i paid for, unless having the icon appear all the time is damaging???

Thank you in advance.
