Mouse hovering acts like click

Help! Since upgrading to win7, sometimes when I just slide my mouse

pointer over an icon it selects that file or launches a program. I know

this is a 'feature' of Win7, but I want to turn it off.

I've gone into Control Panel--> Ease of Access --> Make the Mouse easier

to use and unselected (actually that was the default) Activate a window

by hovering over it with a mouse, but it still happens. The frustrating

thing is that it's inconsistent, doesn't happen all the time.

Anybody have any ideas? Do I need to change settings in more than what

I've detailed above, or is this maybe a bug?

Thanks

Isn't that the task bar icons Not Desktop Icons. I don't know why your mouse

Try a different mouse? Maybe the mouse is defective.

What type of mouse? If it's the old roller ball type it's probably trash.

If it's a wireless or laser mouse try uninstalling and reinstalling the

drivers.

You mention the taskbar. Yes, it happens when I hover over a taskbar

icon. But it also happens within windows themselves. I have unexpectedly

closed programs (sometimes losing data) if I get near the red X in the

far upper right of certain windows. I've also deleted e-mails in Outlook

2007 by passing the mouse over the X in the command bar at the top.

It's like Windows is ignoring the fact that the 'hover option' is

unchecked in the Ease of Use section.

By the way, it's a one year old HP laptop with a trackpasd and a

Microsoft wireless 6000 mouse. Both pointing devices exhibit the same

behavior, and both worked fine before Win 7. Went into device manager

and tried to update drivers for both, aqnd Windows said drivers for both

were up to date.

Hmm. This reminds me of what happens when one accidentally touches the

touchpad. Some touchpads have a setting to help ignore accidental touches,

and in any case, the sensitivity to touch is probably adjustable.

But I also wonder what would happen if you disabled one of the mice so that

only one is active. Maybe you're experiencing a hardware conflict between

the two devices.

I mean no offense, but by chance do you have Parkinson's, tremors, or

any similar affliction that might cause your finger to twitch

uncontrollably? If so, perhaps you're clicking the mouse and you're

not even aware of it.

An easy test is to observe someone else using the same computer to see

if they notice the same behavior.

Likewise, it reminded me of the old story about the woman who

complained to her company's IT guy that her keyboard was broken. It

was inserting random characters into any document she happened to have

open. They replaced her keyboard, but the problem remained. Finally,

they came out to watch her work and to be there at the exact moment

that the random characters showed up. It turned out that her breasts

were resting on the keyboard whenever she leaned forward.

I don't think that's what's happening here, but it's something to be

aware of. :)

Thanks. I thought of it because I have an extended family member with

us can see what she's doing even if she can't. Even so, she doesn't

My guess was that he has dropped crud on the keyboard and it needs a good

cleaning

because the keys are sticking. That could be true of the mouse as well, now

that we no longer clean them often.

It's a question of age. When you're 20 you clear the keyboard, but

If you're having this problem on a laptop, I had the same problem. When I

first had the problem, running Vista and using the touchpad on the laptop, I

found the sensitivity for the touchpad was set too light and when I set it

higher the problem went away. Also, keeping the touchpad clean and free of

oils from skin help too.

Then I went to a wireless mouse and got the problem again, found if I turned

the touchpad off then the problem went away. If, for some reason, I want to

use the touchpad and the mouse is turned off, after I boot up I click the

switch just above the touchpad to turn it on and it works fine.

With that kind of "problem," she must be a touch typist. There's no need

to tell her not to look at her hands. "Hands, what hands??? :>))

Dave,

Thanks for the input. My problem was the touchpad, but not specifically

the sensitivity. I had the 'tapping' function activated (tap touchpad is

same as click) and I was sometimes inadvertently pressing down on the

touchpad as I moved the cursor around. I turned off the tapping

function, and the problem has completely gone away.
