Guest Helen Posted July 10, 2007 Posted July 10, 2007 Hi there I am having a problem with XP SP2 install. I had a laptop which hubby decided might like a cup of coffee - it didnt. The laptop was replaced with one with Vista which I decided I didnt like. I formatted the HDD and installed XP professional on it and found all the current drivers from Toshiba and am slowly setting it all up manually. I have now got to the XP SP2 install and the install keeps hanging at the "checking product key" stage. I followed the directions in this post about changing the product key: Subject: Re: WINXP Pro - SP2 install "checking product key" 6/28/2007 10:48 AM PST By: realcestmoi In: microsoft.public.windowsupdate However it has not helped and the install keeps hanging. Has anyone else got any ideas that might help? -- Helen
Guest Nick Posted July 21, 2007 Posted July 21, 2007 Solution 1) Please go into the CMD prompt (Start/Run --> cmd.exe ) 2) Then type "cd /d %windir%\inf" and make sure we are in that directory. (without "") 3) Then type "ren oem*.inf oem*.old," it will go back to the prompt may give you some error (Do not worry about it) (without "") 4) Then type "ren oem*.pnf oem*.old1," it will go back to the prompt may give you some error (Do not worry about it) (without "") 5) Then goto start - run - type "%windir%\inf" and you will see the files in the folder. (with "") 6) Then find the file by name INFCACHE.1 and take a backup of it to desktop (by copying it to desktop) and delete the INFCACHE.1 from c:\windows\inf. 7) Close all windows and reboot the computer to safe mode and start the installation of SP2 and it should go fine.
