All 81 updates fail to install

I have been having major issues with this brand new system. All updates

download fine but will not install. Have renamed CatRoot2. Ran install of

"WindowsInstaller - KB893803" (successful) and "windowsupdateagent30-x86".

this last installation gives feedback that "install not needed since Windows

Update Agent is already installed". Retry windows updates and they still

fail. Could my problem be an MSInstaller issue? Including below what I

believe to be relevant information form WindowsUpdate.log.

I did not include the entries indicating each of the KB# the updates were

for. Copied portion of the log where the installation began. Your prompt

assistance is GREATLY appreciated.

I realize you say you have done some limited troubleshooting on this issue.

Some of which the steps below *will repeat*. My suggestion is to do the

steps *as presented* and see what happens.

And yes - in this case - you *will* have to force the installation of the

Windows Update Agent with a command line option.

Get Dial-a-Fix:

http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

Use its options to fix:

- Windows Installer

- Windows Update

- All the Registration Center options.

Turn off the "Empty System32\Catroot 2"

Do NOT do "Flush SoftwareDistribution".

Then click "GO" and wait until it is done... Reboot may be needed.

- Download/Install Windows Update v3.

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237

(You may need to install it using the command line switch "/wuforce" right

after an additional reboot - immediately after logging in.)

- Download/Install the 927891 patch.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=7A81B0CD-A0B9-497E-8A89-404327772E5A

- Reboot.

- Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and scan for/install updates.

- Come back and let us know how things went!

I have the same problem. Renamed catroot2 folder, reregistered 6 dlls,

renamed SoftwareDistribution folder, no luck.

Same suggested fix as before - the one that repaired the other person in

this thread's issue...

I realize you say you have done some limited troubleshooting on this issue.

Some of which the steps below *will repeat*. My suggestion is to do the

steps *as presented* and see what happens.

And yes - in this case - you *will* have to force the installation of the

Windows Update Agent with a command line option.

Get Dial-a-Fix:

http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

Use its options to fix:

- Windows Installer

- Windows Update

- All the Registration Center options.

Turn off the "Empty System32\Catroot 2"

Do NOT do "Flush SoftwareDistribution".

Then click "GO" and wait until it is done... Reboot may be needed.

- Download/Install Windows Update v3.

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237

(You may need to install it using the command line switch "/wuforce" right

after an additional reboot - immediately after logging in.)

- Download/Install the 927891 patch.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=7A81B0CD-A0B9-497E-8A89-404327772E5A

- Reboot.

- Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and scan for/install updates.

- Come back and let us know how things went!

Sorry, I read your previous reply right after posting. It worked fine and

ended many hours trying to resolve this issue. Thanks a lot.

It all began after a "repair" (but destroy something else) Win XP

installation I had to do in order to repair Outlook Express 6. It was the

only way I found to reinstall OE, since OE6 comes with IE6 and I had already

installed IE7. Microsoft support regarding this issue is really a joke,

advising you to uncheck and then check OE in Add/remove programs - this only

affects the shortcuts.

After Googling and trying many other solutions (uninstalling IE7 with

spuninst, editing registry, sfc, right clicking OE's .inf file, etc), I

decided to try a repair installation. It worked and the problem changed.

Now thanks to your post I can finally rest in peace :)

Hi Shenan,

I've followed your recommendations to the letter and the updates still fail.

What else can be done to resolve this problem?

I appreciate your interest in helping solve this challenge.

Sincerely,

Will

Shenan Stanley -- I had similar problem to Scott Hippauf. Applied your

solution *as presented* iteratively. On first pass all but 5 updates

installed -- I much appreciate your expert assistance. On 2nd pass two more

updates installed. However, after 4 more iterations the remaining 3 updates

failed. They include the following: security update for excel 2002

(KB940601), security update for office XP (KB914796), and security update for

microsoft .NET framework v.1.1 service pack 1 (KB928366). How to complete

updates?

Hi,

There is program on the Internet, available for download, called dial-a-fix.

It has resolved most of the Update Queries on the net as it reregister all

DLL files, rename the two folders, softwaredistribution and Catroot2,

reregister Windows Update files and a few things more. Note this is only for

a client XP PC. The application will not work on Vista yet.

Download the application, select all boxes and click on GO!.

I hope this helps and any feedback will be appreciated.
