Guest Bodark Posted September 7, 2007 Posted September 7, 2007 I go to the update site. It says I need the latest update software. I click the install button. In a matter of seconds, it runs through Dowloading and Copying Files to 100%. (I assume this means they were downloaded and copied in previous attempts.) However, then a page loads that says, "The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view." I cannot get to the actual updates page. Thanks.
Guest Manu19711 Posted September 7, 2007 Posted September 7, 2007 I get the same thing as you (with Error code: 0x80070020). I noticed that quite a few posts refer to a similar problem so, apparently, it's a Microsoft problem. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! please correct the error !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Guest Bob Wright Posted September 8, 2007 Posted September 8, 2007 Thanks much. I had the same problem, shutdown of SpyBot cured the problem. Guest Bodark Posted September 9, 2007 Posted September 9, 2007 I don't understand most of what I know about this situation, but after a bit of trial and error, I discovered that I could access the updates page if I turned off my old Norton firewall (circa 2003). I've successfully updated many, many times in the past with the Norton firewall left on. Also, I had my Automatic Updates "on" but wasn't paying enough attention to the fact I hadn't received any updates recently. Strangely, when I started trying to access the updates site manually, Automatic Updates kicked in and started downloading. By the time I was finally able to gain access the the updates site, I'd already downloaded part of the 12 updates I was lacking. Strange. Anyway, turning off my Norton firewall got me access to the updates site and my computer is now fully updated. Thanks for your help. Guest Jimmy Posted September 23, 2007 Posted September 23, 2007 If anyone out there has Spybot Search & Destroy and while trying to run Windows update you receive the error number 0x80070020 and this message: "Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page". I corrected the problem in my computer. It was the "Tea Timer" in Spybot S&D. Bring up Spybot S&D and click on mode.....then select advanced mode....click yes in the pop up box. Then click tools at lower left....then click resident.....then uncheck the Resident "Tea Timer" box. X out and that should do it and hopefully most will be able to get the Windows updates. You can go back after updating and put "Tea Timer" back on by following the above steps. You may have to do the same thing next time you update unless Spybot S&D fixes the glitch in the meantime. PS - "Tea Timer" ( if you have Spybot S&D) is an overall protection of settings on your computer. "Bodark" wrote: > I go to the update site. It says I need the latest update software.
