Guest Andy Moorley Posted September 7, 2007 Posted September 7, 2007 On 23rd August, Windows Update decided to self-update as per following log line from windowsupdate.log SelfUpdate handler update required: Current version: 7.0.6000.374, required version: 7.0.6000.381 I am not quite clear if it ever managed to do this - but since then Windows Update has failed to be able to install anything for me.. 2 minutes after the log line above I have 2007-08-23 20:51:52:974 1308 1608 AU ############# 2007-08-23 20:51:53:047 5632 1604 Misc =========== Logging initialized (build: 7.0.6000.381, tz: +0100) =========== 2007-08-23 20:51:53:047 5632 1604 Misc = Process: C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\SelfUpdate\Handler\WuSetupV.exe 2007-08-23 20:51:53:042 5632 1604 Setup Performing SelfUpdate installation 2007-08-23 20:52:53:071 5632 1604 Setup WARNING: Failed to stop the WU service, error = 0x8007041D 2007-08-23 20:52:53:072 5632 1604 Setup WuSetup has finished. Further more I can not stop the Windows Update service by hand either - it always just gets stuck in the "stopping" state. Have tried to do update from(built in) Adminstator account - no difference. Have used Safe Mode to rename %windir%/SoftwareDistribution out of the way - no improvement. There are no other errors in the Event logs relating to any related services (COM+) Any ideas? Thanks Andy
Guest Dan Riley Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 Same thing has happened to me. Ever since the update on 8/23, which included "Windows Update software 7.0.6000.381", I have lost all manual control of Windows Update on my Vista Ultimate machine. Since that date, there have been some updates installed automatically (KBs 938194, 933360, 938952, 938979,and 939159, along with a couple of Defender updates) on 9/5 and 9/8. Every time I click "check for updates" I get a Code 800B0100. Also, one of my friends just bought a brand-new laptop with Vista Home Premium. After running Update the first time (and installing the above-mentioned "software 7.0.6000.381), he now has the same update problem I do. There seems to be no way to roll this back that I have found (even System Restore didn't help). Does anyone out there have any insight or solutions for this? Guest Andy Moorley Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 Hi Dan "Dan Riley" wrote: > Same thing has happened to me. Ever since the update on 8/23, which included > "Windows Update software 7.0.6000.381", I have lost all manual control of > Windows Update on my Vista Ultimate machine. Just to say I opened a Windows Update Support request on this (it seems you can do this for free!) and am now in dialogue with a MS support person. His initial suggestions haven't worked yet - but I'll keep this entry updated with anything useful that comes out. His initial response (in case you want to try it) was about trying something along this line 1. Open an Administrator command prompt by right clicking on Start -> All | > Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt and selecting "Run as | > Administrator" and clicking "Allow" for the elevation prompt | > 2. In the command prompt, type the command below | > fsutil resource setautoreset C: | > (This assumes that C: is the drive in which Vista is installed. If it is | > installed on another drive like D:, please change the drive letter | > appropriately) (it seemed to require c:\ for me in order to work) and then install the Windows Update agent http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237 Cheers Andy
Guest Ian.Burney@gmail.com Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 I have exactly the same problem but whenever I try to re-install Windows Update I get the error "Windows Update Installer Fatal Error Windows Update Agent Installer encountered unrecoverable error" Anyone else had this linked to trying to fix "SelfUpdate handler update required: Current version: 7.0.6000.374" In essence I can't install updates or re-install Windows Update Agent. Thanks, Ian B
