Can't download window updates,Wondows XP

When i go to the microsoft download site, the web page fails to load, it just

hangs there. After a period of time, the only way i can clear this screen is

to "alt, control and delete". if i reconnect my broadband connection, I

cannot access any web-page or use my outlook, i have to re-boot. I have

disabled my Nortons Firewall and Spyweeper and problem still exists.

Possibly connected with this problem, is a message I get when i boot-up my

PC.

Generic host process for win32 has encountered a problem and needs to close

with the error message

c\doc\owner\local\temp\werda5a.dir00svchost.exe.mdmp

If I let the PC sit for 5to 10 mins before I access the web, I get a flash

of white and the bar at the bottom, the background changes from blue to

white. If I'm on the net, it throws me out.

Hi Alan,

In order to Windows Update to load properly, you need three Services on

and not disabled.

Automatic Updates Startup Type is

Automatic.

Background Intelligent Transfer Service Startup Type is Manual.

Event Log Startup Type is

Automatic.

Hi Alan,

Which Software Browser are you using? Windows Update will only work in

Internet Explorer.

By the way, what operating system are you using, not mentioned.

Thanks for the reply, I'm using Internet Explorer 6 , XP home addition and

Nortons Internet Security. Also note, i have checked my PC for viruses using

the following scanners

McAfee stinger

Avast Virus Cleaner

Symantec Online Scanner

ClanmillPortable

Windows Defender

No viruses found

I have run Hi-Jack, but ouput means nothing to me

Regards

All the above scanners were recommended by a PC magazine I subscribe to.

Hi Alan,

What version of Windows XP Home Edition? Have you installed Service Pack

2? Have you installed the latest Windows Installer 3.1? If installed, should

be listed in Add or Remove Programs.

Also go to Services and make sure that no Service is disabled. Change

the Startup Type to Manual from Disabled in Properties for the Service. See

if that doesn't help.

Also check in Internet Explorer Add-ons. If Active-X is disabled, remove

the Active-X component. Make sure all Active-X components are enabled.
