Guest Matty Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 I have WinXP Pro SP2. 1) Installing via Automatic Updates KB923694 keeps popping up in my Automatic Updates notifications. I installed it and Automatic Updates says that it was successfully installed. When I check my Control Panel's Add or Remove Programs list, KB923694 is not listed. 2) Installing via Microsoft Updates When I check "Review your update history" on the online Microsoft Update webpage, I have several entries (more than 5) saying that KB923694 was successfully installed from Automatic Updates. When the online Microsoft Update checks for updates for my compu, it doesn't find KB923694 as needing to be installed. 3) Installing by downloading from MS Download Center I downloaded KB923694 from here (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=560E8778-9733-4719-A565-614FD490C320&displaylang=en) and then installed it. KB923694 still didn't show up in my Add or Remove Programs list. I don't know which parts of the KB923694.log I'm supposed to post here so I just chose the lines that have the word "error" or "failed" in them: 5.469: DoInstallation: CleanPFR failed: 0x2 5.703: KB923694 Setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is not correct. 5.719: KB923694 Setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is not correct. 5.750: KB923694 Setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is not correct.

Manual download link for KB929123: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=27cca556-0872-4803-b610-4c895ceb99aa Bye, Freudi
Guest Matty Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 After clearing the \Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder and rebooting, I re-installed KB923694 through Automatic Updates. It said it installed successfully. Also saw another "successful installation" entry in the online "Review your update history." But, the Hotfix is not listed in my Add or Remove Programs list. When I tried to check for updates in the online Microsoft Update page, I got this error message: The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view .... Error number 0x80072EFD... I'll try installing KB929123 that you mentioned below. I think I had a problem with this one before too but KB929123 is not being listed by Automatic Updates or Microsoft Updates as needing to be installed. Guest Matty Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 Tried to install KB923694 again, this time from the manual download. I got a successful installation message. KB923694 didn't appear in my Add or Remove Programs list. KB929123 and KB923694 are not listed. > Oh, and looking at the headers of your posting, you have a "nice" mix > of your OE between KB923694 and KB929123: Does this mean that these two are installed even though (1) they're not listed in my Add or Remove Programs list and (2) I get Auto Update notification to install KB923694? Then, I should just disregard the notifications? I've had previous experience though that when one hotfix is not installed, it somehow prevents Auto Update/Microsoft Update to list all other updates that should be installed. It's only when he problematic hotfix is installed that the bottleneck clears up and I get to see the other updates. So, I'm worried that not being able to install KB923694 will keep me from knowing what other updates I need to install. > http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941 I've actually already done several of the recommendation on this webpage before (e.g., adding the microsoft URLs to the exceptions/allowed lists, verified that my internet connection is working, tried disabling Windows firewall, etc.). I haven't tried tweaking the hosts file though and WinHTTP proxy configuration. Later, I'll go through the entire steps again including these last two. Finished. Rebooted. Still no KB929123 in Add or Remove Programs window. Finally just did a System Restore to Sept. 1 when everything was working fine. Now, when I checked Add or Remove programs, I saw both KB923694 (installed 8/24/07) and KB929123 (installed 8/25/07) listed. Strange why AutoUpdates would suddenly list a particular Hotfix as needing to be installed when it's already installed. Just one of those Microsoft mysteries. Anyway, thank you for all your input.

Cause you, someone else or an application replaced the msoe.dll included in KB929123 with the one included in KB923694 for whichever senseless reason. And your OE is *still* screwed up looking into the headers of your posting! Reinstall KB929123 once more while OE is completly shut down and reboot Windows once. > Just one of those Microsoft mysteries. Well, it's "not always" MS's fault, you know? -) Bye, Freudi
Guest Mark M Morse Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 Hi Freudi: Clearly, it goes without saying that no business is perfect, yet the relative volume of Microsoft errors (eg: software bugs, convoluted documentation, poorly-developed support venues, broken web-site links, bad e-mail addresses), more than justifies Matty's comment. ~ Mark Ottmar Freudenberger wrote, in part: > > Well, it's "not always" MS's fault, you know? -) > Matty wrote, in part: >> >> Just one of those Microsoft mysteries.

Guest Mark M Morse Posted September 13, 2007 Posted September 13, 2007 Hello Freudi: Maybe you missed my point because tunnel vision has you focused on Matty's issue, rather than on his comment. For end-users to consider issues with Microsoft products as possibly belonging to the categories of that which cannot be explained, and that which does not make sense, and that which is clearly broken with no signs of forthcoming information from Microsoft for resolution, the sheer volume of these considerations leads many to make comments such as Matty's. It is completely justifiable in these circumstances to wonder if an issue is just one of countless issues that seem mysterious because so many issues must be left unresolved without wiping the hard drive and restoring the system. You may certainly claim that Matty's particular issue has nothing to do with Microsoft sloppiness, but doing so does not preclude other end-users from considering the possibility that, when something odd happens, it could be related to one of these countless Microsoft errors for which a clear explanation is never discovered. Cheers, ~ Mark Ottmar Freudenberger wrote: > > Not in this case. Period.
