Guest Steve Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 I am the administrator. I cannot turn off auto update and do a manual update. My options to change setting is grayed out and I'm told to consult my administrator, which is me. I did not lock these settings. I simply set them back in May when I installed these computers. They are not doing their auto update for some reason and I've decided to do them manually, but I CANNOT CHANGE THE SETTINGS. Advice please.

Check the Service Manager for "Automatic Update" service Click Start, select Run and type: Services.msc Press Enter Locate the - "Automatic Update" Make sure the service is not disabled and started. 2. If the service is disabled and cannot be started: Go to START, Select RUN Type: regsvr32 wuaueng.dll Press Ok 3. If all else fails:- Windows Update Greyed Out - Restore (Line 179) http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm Automatic Updates options are grayed out?: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/aupolicy.htm "taipan" posted the response he got from MS when he had problems and nothing else worked - <snip> regedit goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate and rightclick on the folder windowsupdate. goto export and save it for backup. then delete the folder and all its subfolders. still in regedit goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wuauserv\Parameters in this folder look at Service.dll.double click on it and look to see if the value data is "C:\windows\system32\wuauserv.dll" if not make sure to change it to this. then restart your machine. I don't guarantee that this will work for everyone and changing items from the registry, without a backup is not advised, but hopefully this will help anyone having similar problems. <snip> -- ==================================== TaurArian [MS-MVP] 2005-2008 - Australia ==================================== How to make a good post: http://www.dts-l.org/goodpost.htm Defending your machine: http://defendingyourmachine2.blogspot.com/ http://taurarian.mvps.org/index.htm Emails will not be acknowledged - please post to the newsgroup so all may benefit.
