Guest katienelson Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 How can I set my computer to only update everything when I shut down my computer myself? It keeps restarting when I'm in the middle of something to install updates.
Guest Jupiter Jones [MVP] Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 Right click My Computer/Computer and click Properties. Click Windows Update Change Settings from automatic to one of the others as desired. There many be differences depending on the version of Windows. If you turn off Windows Update, you will not be notified so it will be important for you to regularly check for updates. Normally updates are released the 2nd Tuesday of each month. -- Jupiter Jones [MVP] Windows Server System - Microsoft Update Services http://www3.telus.net/dandemar "katienelson" <katienelson@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:912057E2-DBF4-4D94-BF85-E5F200D57283@microsoft.com... > How can I set my computer to only update everything when I shut down my > computer myself? Guest katienelson Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 It was set to update every day at 3:00 am. It updated at 10:37 am while I was in the middle of typing something and rebooted. I want it to install things, but I do not want it to automatically restart. Is there a way for me to change the settings so it will not automatically restart while still downloading and installing these updates?
Guest Jupiter Jones [MVP] Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 Not if you are going to leave it to Automatically Install. Once the updates are installed, you should restart as soon as possible. The benefits/protections of the update are not always available until after a reboot. -- Jupiter Jones [MVP] Windows Server System - Microsoft Update Services http://www3.telus.net/dandemar "katienelson" <katienelson@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:EE8601DE-170E-4985-A557-5511D35A9A96@microsoft.com... > It was set to update every day at 3:00 am. Guest katienelson Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 Dang it. That is minutely inconvenient. Thank you very much for you help! I appreciate it.

Then provided you don't allow them to be installed when you're in the middle of something you will have control over your restarts. E.g. when you're ready to install *and* ready to boot, allow them. The only problem that I have found with this option is that if I have accumulated a lot of uninstalled updates and I want to shut down my computer I may lose the ability to actually power everything down before I walk away. E.g. the computer may be able to shut itself down I may not be able to shut down anything else by turning off my power bar. } HTH Robert Aldwinckle ---
