I was having this problem on a Dell Inspiron. I killed off all non-

essential processes, started the update, and then killed explorer.exe

too. It then installed ok.

I don't know what was causing the update to abort, but here are some

things that were running:

kpf4ss.exe kpf4gui.exe (Sunbelt Personal Firewall)

Googletoolbarnotifier

nvsvc32.exe (NVidia)

EM_EXEC.exe (Logitech)

appservices.exe (Iomega)

acs.exe (Atheros)

Windows XP Security Update KB928366 Won't Install

I have two computers a Sony Vaio Desk Top and Toshiba Laptop. Th Sony installed no problem however, the Toshiba refuses to install either automatically or manually. I check with several anti-virus checkers, ran System Mechanic Pro, Registry Mechanic, etc.,tuned off the PC-cillon Firewall and it still won't install. This seems like more MicroSoft incompetence.

I am getting a laugh out of this - According to the microsoft update website

this has downloaded and installed successfully on my computer 8 times when

in fact it has never downloaded. Going direct to the manual site -

essentially nothing happens. It simply won't install on either of my

computers and I am not going to waste anymore time on it.

Has anyone received a reply in relation to their complaint about this failure

to upload? There's obviously a long string of us that have the same problem

but I don't seem to find any offered solutions.

Carol, see below for Patrick Philippot's solution - it worked like a "hot

dang" for us!

"See thread titled "[sOLUTION] You cannot install KB928366 (.Net Framework

1.1 security update)" for a fix.

Microsoft has released a piece of crap [KB928366] and further, rather than

withdraw it, they (BILLY) sees fit just to let everyone continue with JUNK

rather than just fix the dam thing. It becomes much more obvious here about,

that so many Window users have had enough and are making the switch to MAC

and other alternatives, I for sure will seek another OS. I have had 16 total

download install failures with Error Code 0x66A which cannot be found on MS

site search, nor will SO CALLED CUSTOMER SUPPORT respond to MS Site Inquiry

about 10-12 times.

Same here -- XP SP2 -- when I try again & again to install (KB928366), it

just says "failed" and gives no further info.

First time time this has happened in nearly four years.

I tried this solution and it worked -- with one addition to step 2: extract

the whole of dotnetfx.exe because on my PC, at least, the .cab file was

required also.

My thanks to "jandevries1@gmail.com".

Hi Rusty and John:

I had a reoffer problem with this update on an XP system. After

searching this newsgroup, I

found the following post (pasted below) by a great guy in France.

His steps

are easy to follow, and it fixed my issue. His post is from

07-16-2007.

Maybe it will help you, too.

Cheers,

~ Mark

----------------

This is an old bug showing up again. Although the official solution

involves reinstalling the framework after manipulating the registry

with the

installer cleanup tool, there's a much simpler way to fix this:

1. Instead of using Windows Update, download the KB928366 package

from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=281FB2CD-C715-4F05-A01F-0455D2D9EBFB&displaylang=en

Do not install yet.

2. Download the .Net framework 1.1 redistributable package from here

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=262d25e3-f589-4842-8157-034d1e7cf3a3

3. Use Winzip or a similar utility to unpack dotnetfx.exe in a

folder of

your choice. You should get the following files:

netfx.msi

install.exe

InstMsi.exe

InstMsiW.exe

netfx1.cab

4. Launch the KB928366 installer. It will soon complain that it can

find the

installation CD-ROM (don't ask me why). Browse to the folder where

you

unpacked the dotnetfx files.

That's it.

This procedure can be applied to any similar situation regarding

..Net

framework updates. I'm using it since years (that is, since this

Windows

Update bug exists).

Good luck.

I tried those instructions, but the KB928366 installer never asks me for a

CD-ROM. It just starts and then ends.

My problem, however, is not that KB928366 does not install, but that even if

it installs, the Windows Update continue to ask me to install it, as it

would not be installed at all.

Any idea why?

Hi Dario:

The issue that I had is the same as yours that's what I meant when

I wrote "reoffer problem".

I regret that you still have the problem and that I cannot answer

your question. If you go to Mr. Phillippot's web site, you can send

him a message. He's a nice person and knowledgeable.

Have you tried the instructions given here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100/

Basically, it involves un-installing .NET Framework Version 1.1 Service pack

1 in Add/Remove Programs.

Then download (a link is on the above page) and use the Windows Installer

CleanUp Utility, and remove all references to .NET Framework Version 1.1

Service pack 1 (only!). (A shortcut to the utility will be place in your

Start

Menu).

Then reinstall .NET Framework Version 1.1 Service pack 1:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=A8F5654F-088E-40B2-BBDB-A83353618B38&ampdisplaylang=en&displaylang=en

Then run Windows Update again, to install KB929729.

KB928366 Microsoft Support Team Dumb and Mum

I now have 83 downloads and same amount of "Install Failures" for Microsoft's KB928366 along with 25 plus online unanswered inquiries to microsoft.com, all of which I've never encountered such an upfront sign of total failure from Gate's Micrsoft.com

If you EVER find a FIX for this MS Mess please let me know of solution procedure.

Meanwhile, I don't think a fix is forthcomng from this now sinking ship-MS. So am spending too much considerable time to NEVER AGAIN be abandoned by another OS Giant run by a an non-operative customer support team. I believe Apple's MAC appears to be a considerable alternative in favor of available. I now search to both learn about new to me MAC OS.

And of course a good deal on new investment. ANY ADVICE APPRECIATED.

Re: KB928366 Microsoft Support Team Dumb and Mum

Try this. It was posted here in July.

Steps:

1) Go to the control panel and select the add/remove software tool

then TRY and remove everything with .NET in the name. If you can

remove everything go to step 3. If you cannot remove everything go to

step 2.

2) Go and download the windows installer clean up tool at:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

run the windows installer clean up tool and BE CAREFUL to only select

the .NET items from the list and remove them. Note: this will likely

leave the names as "dead links" in the Add/Remove Software list

(ahhh ...Microsoft thoroughness at its best) but not to worry they

will do no harm and will get fixed when we finish. It's possible to

clean them up but let's stay out of the registry :-)

3) Go and get the file "dotnetfx.exe" this is ".NET 1.1" from:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=262D25E3-F589-4842-8157-034D1E7CF3A3&displaylang=en

install it.

4) Go and get the file "NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe" this is the ".NET

1.1 service pack 1"

install it.

5) Install the SECURITY patch, the dreaded KB928366, we have all grown

to hate. You can install it from the Windows Update program (be sure

to ONLY select the KB928366 patch and NOTHING else, we dont want to

put back 2.0 or 3.0 yet). It's OK go ahead and click ...it will be

alright...you can do it...it's just one more time... :-)

6) Re-run the Windows Update and you can add back in .NET 2.0 and 3.0
