Guest iPC Posted September 15, 2007 Posted September 15, 2007 Though Auto Updates was set to 'notify', when I finally disabled Automatic Updates in services.msc, XP quit locking up several times per day. Sure nice being able to use my computer again.
Guest PA Bear Posted September 15, 2007 Posted September 15, 2007 If disabling the AU service resulted in the machine not locking up anymore, something else is very wrong with your machine. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE, OE, Security, Shell/User) since 2002 AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.org/ iPC wrote: > Though Auto Updates was set to 'notify', when I finally disabled Automatic > Updates in services.msc, XP quit locking up several times per day. Guest iPC Posted September 15, 2007 Posted September 15, 2007 Machine's working great now. Guest Alan Posted September 15, 2007 Posted September 15, 2007 Here is Microsoft's explanation -- and Mea Culpa -- from one of its techies: http://blogs.technet.com/mu/archive/2007/09/13/how-windows-update-keeps-itself-up-to-date.aspx Alan "iPC" <yowsa@nospam.com> wrote in message news:uhhX$b99HHA.2752@TK2MSFTNGP06.phx.gbl... > Machine's working great now. Guest iPC Posted September 15, 2007 Posted September 15, 2007 Thanks, Alan. Gotta agree with many discomfited comments on the page. I maintain a couple dozen computers for 'senior users' and unexpected changes are needlessly upsetting for them. Finally convinced a Mac user that MS doesn't support IE anymore on her computer and that's why she can't check her Hotmail. Got FireFox installed and now she's rockin' hot again. But she doesn't understand Browser Wars. And most senior Windows users won't understand stealth upgrades either. I sure don't. Might pack around a USB-bootable Linux and get them all used to that instead. Argh. Guest azca Posted September 16, 2007 Posted September 16, 2007 My situation is that I normally run an alternative OS, and only run Win-XP a few minutes a month just to keep things updated and secure. But after reading several articles similar to the one at zdnet, I'm a bit concerned. I have my Win-XP WU set to notify only, and according to the article at: http://blogs.technet.com/mu/archive/2007/09/13/how-windows-update-keeps-itself-up-to-date.aspx Before closing, I would like to address another misconception that I have seen publically reported. WU does not automatically update itself when Automatic Updates is turned off, this only happens when the customer is using WU to automatically install upgrades or to be notified of updates. Ok, all well and good, but since I only run Win-XP such a short time, how can I verify that I let it run long enough that WU would be updated, and that I'm fully patched? Any clarification would be appreciated. Thanks.
Guest Alan Posted September 16, 2007 Posted September 16, 2007 Well, if you want to ensure that you have ALL updates, go to the Windows Update page at http://www.update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us You can then manually check for -- and select -- the updates you want by clicking the Custom radio button.
