a problem on your computer is preventing updates from being ...

Windows XP SP2 and Office 2007 need a combined total of 24 updates. Windows

Update is configured to notify but not automatically install updates. When I

attempt to download and install any one or all of the listed updates, the

error message in the subject line appears. There is no error number. Checking

Update History merely tells me that no updates have been installed since the

problem appeared. An error code does appear in c:\windows\WindowsUpdate.log

(don't have access to it where I am now). By searching on the error code in

WindowsUpdate.log, I found in another XP-related newsgroup that others were

having the same exact problem with Microsoft Update. Problem may be related

to absence of a key called senselogon from the Windows registry. In any case,

it seems to be related to the fact that the Updater is asking if the user

logged in is an administrator and is not getting a proper answer. Using

automatic updates circumvents this, because the check is not made. Is there

any known fix for this besides setting the update to occur automatically

(that does appear to solve it)? The reason I do not want to automatically

install updates is that doing so seems to reset a lot of my system software

configuration settings, which costs me a lot of time and trouble to revert

back to my preferred settings. Thanks.
