Guest Dale Networkguy Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 A single patch has failed to properly install on a Windows 2003 SBS server for Virtual Server 2005 R2. The update is KB937986. The update goes through the install, says it is comlete, requests a restart, and once restarted is again reoffered. This is also a WSUS 3.0 box. Initially I tried to install solely by WSUS but having had this time consuming (server reboots are 10-15 minute cycles - Exchange & SQL logs ...etc) is really painful to find the time to make trial & error attempts. I also tried once through MU & then also downloaded the patch directly to the desktop for the last try. How can I troubleshoot this?
Guest MowGreen [MVP] Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 Has the Default Temp/TMP environmental variable been edited, Dale ? That was the cause of the update failing to install or being reoffered in various earlier threads. Guest Dale Networkguy Posted September 20, 2007 Posted September 20, 2007 The value of those environment system variables is both the same: c:\temp. I assume you are refering to system variables and not user variables for tmp/temp. If the user variable if of some noteworthy importance please let me know where I can read more information about this. I really don't remember having every altered this on this box in the 3 years it has been in operation. Any other ideas? Guest MowGreen [MVP] Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 See if you can locate the KB937986.log. That should provide a clue as to where the update is failing to install. It may be in WINDOWS\Temp if not in C:\temp or, in %userprofile%\Local Settings\Temp. Guest Dale Networkguy Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 Here is the contents located under the %userprofile% path: "Patch applied successfully. Resource copied from C:\DOCUME~1\Dale\LOCALS~1\Temp\vssrvc.exe to D:\Program Files\Microsoft Virtual Server\vssrvc.exe Return Code = 3010" So this doesn't clarify much of anything. The patch thinks its installed until the next scan of the system reoffers it again. Any other help you can offer? "MowGreen [MVP]" wrote: > See if you can locate the KB937986.log. Guest MowGreen [MVP] Posted September 22, 2007 Posted September 22, 2007 Try setting TEMP to the D:\ drive, Dale. It appears that the drive with TEMP must be the same one that VS is installed to. Here's the KB937986.log from my system for the VPC update: > Patch applied successfully. Resource copied from D:\DOCUME~1\MOWGRE~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\ > Virtual PC.exe to D:\Program Files\Microsoft Virtual PC\Virtual PC.exe > Return Code = 0 Return Code = 3010 A restart is required to complete the install. This does not include installs where the ForceReboot action is run. Guest Dale Networkguy Posted September 23, 2007 Posted September 23, 2007 I'll look into this suggestion but I have a couple of reservations: This TEMP path is pointing to my personal profile which isn't so easy to redirect without significant ramifications. There are time intensive considerations in doing so and this is still for an unknown result. My should a patch be so convoluted? No other product requires this workaround and I'm not going to swtich TEMP variables every time patches are released for one server. I'll never get anything done growing business with new customers. Does Microsoft provide any deeper support for problematic patches rather than the public newsgroup method? Do you know of any phone number I can use besides the generic one for PSS? Guest Dale Networkguy Posted September 23, 2007 Posted September 23, 2007 Well despite the mentioned reservations I reconsidered that a temporary swith of the user system variable would be of little consequence as long as I flipped it back. So I set it to D:\temp. I then tried installing the WSUS offering from the yellow alert that has been sitting there for weeks and it failed. After that I clicked on the downloaded patch file that was already pre-positioned ready-to-go on the desktop. The result in the log file match the previous attempts: "Patch applied successfully. Resource copied from d:\Temp\vssrvc.exe to D:\Program Files\Microsoft Virtual Server\vssrvc.exe Return Code = 3010 " So what is Return Code = 3010 as opposed to the Return Code - 0 that you had gotten? Please advise. "MowGreen [MVP]" wrote: > Try setting TEMP to the D:\ drive, Dale. Guest MowGreen [MVP] Posted September 24, 2007 Posted September 24, 2007 Here's a list of codes generated from Windows Installer: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304888 ERROR_SUCCESS 0 Action completed successfully. ERROR_SUCCESS_REBOOT_ 3010 A restart is required to complete the REQUIRED install. This does not include installs where the ForceReboot action is run. Note that this error will not be available until future version of the installer. It appears that 'something' is amiss if rebooting the system does not get the update to install properly or, it's being redected by AU. Since this is a Security update, then you're entitled to 'no charge' support - > Customers in the U.S. and Canada can receive technical support from Microsoft > Product Support Services at 1-866-PCSAFETY. There is no charge for support calls that are > associated with security updates. That's as deep as it gets, Dale. Two things that I'd try would be 1) Make sure that all Services for VS are Stopped prior to installing the update. 2) Download the update once more and save it to or move it to the D:\ drive and see if it installs from there. Guest Dale Networkguy Posted September 25, 2007 Posted September 25, 2007 After the reboot the update seems to have taken this time, which of course is very welcome news. Guest MowGreen [MVP] Posted September 25, 2007 Posted September 25, 2007 I'll second that, Dale. So I take it that it's not being reoffered again ? Guest Dale Networkguy Posted September 26, 2007 Posted September 26, 2007 Interestingly enough the update has not reoffered itself since the steps taken on my last post. So it would seem this time consuming patch installation is over. This is a very strange patch and I hope Microsoft fixes this for the future. Thanks for the assistance.
