Guest shogyn Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 Hi! My problem is that our WSUS server says, correctly, that there are several updates that are approved but not installed yet on the clients, but the clients clearly logs that they do not find any new updates (see log file below). One test client installed 2 updates once, but nothing after that. The 3 other test clients have not installed anything. All clients report which updates that are needed. I would appreciate any help very much. We are in northeastern Cambodia, with limited internet connection and are very dependent on the WSUS server to work in order to be able to updates all clients. - WSUS is installed on a PC running Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition - The clients use Windows XP Pro SP2 This is a log from the last update cycle for one of the clients (WindowsUpdate.log): Have you checked that the update files have been downloaded? If the clients are running non-US versions of Windows, are the correct language(s) enabled in WSUS? Are the updates enabled for all computers, or just specific groups? Harry.
Guest shogyn Posted September 20, 2007 Posted September 20, 2007 Thank you very much for your reply. - No, I have not checked if the update files has been downloaded. How do I check that? Thought I do not think that they have been downloaded because I have not seent the yellow tray icon saying that updates are beeing downloaded, not even for a second. - It is US versions of windows. - All updates are approved for all computers. I do not use WSUS to be able to test the updates first. I use it to spare our 128 kbps internet connection. I am now downloading all windowsupdates for the server directly from the internet to see if it would help. It seems to be something wrong with the server, because it does not work for any client. There are 2 more bits of information to take into account: 1. So far there has been very difficult to get licenses for software here in Cambodia, so we have only used pirated software. We have now bought licensed versions of windows for all our computers, and they will be installed this weekend. This means though, that the test server I use have a pirated version of Windows Server 2003. I do not know if that could be a couse to my problem. In that case, the problem will be solved this weekend. 2. This is the first time I do this, so there is a possibility that I did the wrong settings in the Group Policy. These are my current settings: - Do not display 'Install Updates and Shut Down' option in Shut Down Windows dialog box: Not configured - Do not adjust default option to 'Install Updates and Shut Down' in Shut Down Windows dialog box: Not configured - Configure Automatic Upates: Enabled Configuare Automatic Updating: 3 - Auto download and notify for install - Specify intranet Microsoft update service location: Enabled Set the intranet update service for detecting updates: http://Server-PC-D-2 Set the intranet statistics server: http://Server-PC-D-2 - Enable Client side targeting: Disabled - Reschedule Automatic Updates scheduled installations: Enabled Wait after system startup (minutes): 2 No auto-restart for scheduled Automatic Updates installations: Enabled - Automatic Updates detection frequency: Not configured - Allow Automatic Updates immediate installation: Enabled - Delay Restart for scheduled installations: Not configured - Re-prompt for restart with scheduled installations: Not configured - Allow non-administrators to receive update notifications: Enabled - Enable recommende4d updates via Automatic Udates: Enabled - Enabling Windows Updates Power Management to automatically wake up the system to install scheduled updates: Not configured - Allow signed content from intranet Microsoft update service location: Enabled Thanks again! --------------------------------- Jeremia Mörling RIDE IT Advisor International Cooperation Cambodia "Harry Johnston" wrote: > > "shogyn" <shogyn@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message > > news:8E94FBA4-E606-45C7-9343-9E783325B803@microsoft.com... > > > | My problem is that our WSUS server says, correctly, that there are several > > | updates that are approved but not installed yet on the clients, but the > > | clients clearly logs that they do not find any new updates (see log file > > | below). > > Have you checked that the update files have been downloaded? > > If the clients are running non-US versions of Windows, are the correct > language(s) enabled in WSUS? > > Are the updates enabled for all computers, or just specific groups? > > Harry. >

I meant to ask if they had been downloaded on the server, not on the clients. In the update services console, in the updates view, the File Status column will show an icon, hovering the mouse over the icon will say "Ready for installation" or "Ready for installation (files not downloaded)". Or you can look under "Download status" on the front page of the update services console, it will show how many updates are still missing files. > - All updates are approved for all computers. In order to conserve your internet connection, it would be best to only approve updates you actually need. Harry.
Guest shogyn Posted September 20, 2007 Posted September 20, 2007 Thank you for having patiense with me. The file status shows that "The update is downloading" and the download status shows that I have about 12 GB left to download. The test environment is not connected to the rest of the network (and therefore not connected to the internet either). I thought the files downloaded during synchronization, which would mean that the files were finished downloading when a synchronization succeded. The file status did not show when opening an update to view the report for it and I did not think about the possibility to add additional columns to the console view. So I guess a successfull synchronization only means that WSUS has downloaded all the information about the updates, not the updates themselves. The solution was as easy as I thought and I am very greatful for you help! Yep. The updates are only downloaded once you approve them. Harry.
