Error number: 0x80070005

When I attempt Windows Update, I get the above error number. I've discovered

that's an "access denied" message. I tried running

%windir%/windowsupdate.log but I get the message: "The process cannot access

the file because it is being used by another process."

I also downloaded Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool 1.7.0039.0,

which provides info, but I can't see anything in the results that would lead

me to the problem.

I've tried the obvious (clear temp files) and the not-so-obvious (deleting

files in my Windows\SoftwareDistribution\WebSetup and WuRedir directories),

but no luck. Any ideas? I'm dead in the water with my updates.

This problem occurs because the appropriate permissions are not detected.

See the following:

Error message when you visit the Windows Update Web site or the Microsoft

Update Web site: "0x800A0046"
