prepairing your desktop, instead of welcome

When I shut or restart I get a message Preparing your desktop, I get my desktop but my files have disappeared

If instead of above message I get Welcome, then everything is correct. It may take quite a few times of shutting

and starting my computer, before I get the Welcome message. Thanks for any assistance. Michael
