windows 7 x64 windows and programs dont see my tether as internet connection

I have my computer tethered to my android smartphone (HTC Wildfire S) It works great...except it appears to be invisable! I just built this computer Windows 7 x64 asus motherboard intel i3 dual core processor lots of memory and other bells and whistles.

You need for a new computer to have a visable internet connection, because all of your programs want to be updated... including windows update. I bought a broadband to go adapter for just such an emergency, but I'd like to get this fixed as I hate virgin mobile

and their "unlimited plans". Help
