What's up with gadgets?

When I click on the "add gadgets" it takes me to a microsoft site

that says they are no longer being offfered and there is a security issue. I just got this computer in October and was able to d'load them then, unfortunately the security release was from July. Would have been nice to know that first. They are still

shown as a feature on the Windows 7 microsoft pages, that is how I found out about them.

Also the Fix it for me page for the security issue is unclear, I don't know whether I am supposed to be enabling or disabling. Is it saying I can still use them and the security issue will be resolved? Confusing.

Do the Microsoft/Windows updates do this fix automatically?
