I have AVG installed, but needs renewing. I have bought Norton Gold Edition, do i have to uninstall

I have a Advent 7083 Laptop,Windows XP,with AVG anti Virus Protection(which has lapsed). I want to install Norton Gold Edition. When I tried to install Norton on myPC (eMachines) Vista Basics, my PC turned itself off and will not let me restore or do anything else. A message comes on PC screen to say:A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your PC.

 

 

If this is the first time you've seen this STOP error screen, restart your computer. Check to make sure any Hardware or Software is properly installed..... If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed Hardware/Software. Disable BIOS memory options such as Caching or shadowing.....

I have used F8 and safe mode, to no avail. PC returns to above screen. Any ideas?

 

 

So hence my insecurity about installing Norton on Laptop.

 

 

If anyone can with either of the above, i would appreciate it.
