Guest Enkel Posted September 22, 2007 Posted September 22, 2007 I recently changed my motherboard and had to reinstall/repair my XP O/S. Update then told me I had to download and reinstall 83 updates. They downloaded, but when it came to installation none of them would install. I got a box with a list of them and the message "83 updates failed to install". When I close down now I am told "Wait while Windows installs updates 1 of 71 installing ..." After a few minutes Windows closes down without further comment. Clearly the installation has failed because it goes through the same process every time. What can I do to install these updates, please. Thank you

Get Dial-a-Fix: http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix Use its options to fix: - Windows Installer - Windows Update - All the Registration Center options. Turn off the "Empty System32\Catroot 2" Do NOT do "Flush SoftwareDistribution". Then click "GO" and wait until it is done... Reboot may be needed. - Download/Install Windows Update v3. http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237 (You may need to install it using the command line switch "/wuforce" right after an additional reboot - immediately after logging in.) - Download/Install the 927891 patch. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=7A81B0CD-A0B9-497E-8A89-404327772E5A - Reboot. - Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and scan for/install updates. - Come back and let us know how things went! -- Shenan Stanley MS-MVP -- How To Ask Questions The Smart Way http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html

I followed your instructions (above) and guess what? MS Update re-downloaded all the updates and installed them perfectly, all 82 of them (don't know why the number keeps changing, but who cares!) Now all is well. Thank you so much. Enkel
