Updates stopping exteral hard drive working.

I have an external Freecom 160 GB hard drive which connects by usb. Yesterday I used it extesively. I also receive lots of updates. Today my drive cannot be recognised, Please help I am desperate to retreive files from this drive which is my backup drive.
