when i place my laptop on a table top my touchpad doesnt work but when i place it on my lap it works

when i use my touchpad for the pointer while having my laptop sitting on top of a table it doesnt work and when i sit the laptop on my lap it works fine it is so annoyin anyone know what i can do to sort this out? it is a dell computer if that helps? anyone?
