Microsoft Security Essentials not udating

Microsoft Security Essentials is not updating. This problem began Jan 21. I have tried updating MSSE using the update feature and Windows Update. Windows Update shows no update available. MSSE update feature shows no update for two days and encourages

a search for updates which does not happen.
