touchpad on my laptop enlarges and shrinks the view seemingly at random. How do I control that?

Sometimes when I swipe my finger across the touchpad to move the curser a magnifying glass icon comes up and my view zooms or shrinks. I don't know what triggers that. This is extremely annoying. I want to know how to control this function
